Dole says GOPers should fall in line behind Trump, pushes Gingrich for VP

Bob Dole encouraged fellow Republicans Saturday to back Donald Trump and suggested the presumptive GOP nominee select Newt Gingrich as his running mate.

In an interview with CNN's Ana Cabrera, Dole -- the 1996 Republican nominee who said he spoke with Trump last week -- also suggested Trump apologize to Arizona Sen. John McCain and New Mexico Gov. Susanna Martinez for disparaging comments he's made about them in the past.

"I have been a Republican all my life," said Dole, who endorsed former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at one point during the 2016 primary fight but has since backed Trump. "The party has done a lot for me. I hope I've done a lot for the party along the way. But when Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, it was an easy call for me. What's a lifelong Republican supposed to do, support the opponent? I don't think so."(continued)

Nancy Pelosi’s sidekick could never be acceptable for VP, but if Dole wants to push him that would be okay. Maybe they will get into a shoving match and provide some entertainment. Neither of them are competent leaders.

Newt might be the ‘insider’s outsider’ but he wouldn’t be to Trump what Bush was to Reagan. Newt has a very patriotic streak and has been friends with and an advisor to Trump...Bush was poison from the primaries on.

It’s hard to know what to make of Newt sometimes. At times, he’s brilliant, and then at other times he veers off into shallow, politically correct talking points. It’s like he’s got one foot inside the Uniparty, and one foot out. I would be comfortable with him as chief of staff because I think that’s where his talents are most suited. But I think we need someone more ideologically in sync with Trump, like Sessions, for VP.

Newt is not VP material. His time has passed. I agree with the consensus here that Newt should be Chief of Staff or an advisor.

Newt is too old. By choosing him, Trump would be making the same mistake that Schrub did: choosing Cheney, who was too old to run for president.

By failing to groom a VP successor, in the 2004 election, Schrub contributed yet another factor to the subsequent Bath House election disaster.

Dole can still express his opinion and he is supporting and trying to help Trump.

And it’s just a suggestion for Trump’s consideration. Obviously Trump should and will choose who he wants.

Dole is pointing out that Newt does have a lot of the qualifications and expertise Trump is looking for: someone to help him w Congress.

And that’s why Newt should be Trump’s Chief of Staff, not VP.

Yup. Too many FReepers can't think outside the box and consider the bigger, long view.

Two old gray beards are a terrible ticket. Newt as Chief of Staff would be a much more valuable asset to Trump than Newt as VP. Duncan Hunter Jr. Has all of the qualifications (and youth) that Trump is looking for.

I agree Newt for chief of staff. We want a killer there. The VP should be young and able to take on the fight in the event of Trumps death or impeachment. They will try both.
I want a VP that scares the establishment more than Trump does. It will keep Trump alive and give the VP 8 years to learn how to kill the DC establishment. I want to see Pelosi eyeballs on the grill.

The only problem I have with Newt is his love for Nancy.

Newt may be part of the establishment but because he is, as Chief of Staff, he can tutor and mentor Trump on how the establishment works.

Does anyone remember when Patton won a major tank battle in North Africa during WWII:

"Rommel, you bastard, I read your book!"

No to Newt. He’s inside. He’s establishment. He’s yesterday’s bread. He’s everything Trump is not supposed to be.

Dole said “As long as an establishment guy is on the ticket Bob Dole is happy. Bob Dole, damn it!”

Trump and Newt talk every day. Trump’s speeches are more substantive now because Newt is coaching Trump. This is a good thing.

What is your problem with the fact that Cruz has not QUIT? Are you in denial that his continued actions are unwelcomed? I know you invested a lot of effort as bundler for Cruz, it give it up, please. He LOST, he needs to stop messing with delegates, needs to RELEASE his delegates, and needs to stop scheming about the convention. It it’s NOTHING his convention. Heck, the guy has still NOT endorsed the nominee, Trump. He lied.
