(CNN)Donald Trump's campaign is scrambling to ramp up its planning for the general election, including scraping together a list of potential vice presidential candidates, after Trump abruptly became the presumptive Republican nominee Tuesday night.

The Trump campaign, blindsided by rival Ted Cruz's sudden exit from the race, is now beginning internal deliberations about potential vice presidential candidates, two Trump campaign sources tell CNN.

Trump does value loyalty...those who stick with him are appreciated.

I expect Trump to mention that he’d love to have Palin in his cabinet but she has already said it would take too much time away from her family. He’ll give her a graceful way out.

Either Sessions or Allen West....

There is a *massive* anti-establishment movement afoot this year -- on both sides of the aisle (e.g. Sanders). So strong that, if the polls I've seen are correct, as many as 20% of Bernie Sanders voters could cross over and vote TRUMP vs Hillary.

If Trump picked anyone even remotely connected with the establishment, he would lose that huge advantage of pure anti-establishment vs establishment.

As good a candidate as Cruz was -- the type of candidate FReepers have been begging for for years -- just the very fact that he is a senator perhaps was enough for him to have lost support among the *very* pissed off, *very* anti-establishment voters this year.

Trump's VP pick cannot be anyone who is, or whoever has been, a GOP officeholder. In this year's environment, the choice must be a purely anti-establishment Trump ticket vs the consummate establishment Clinton ticket. Don't fight the trend....

I agree. Congressman Duncan Hunter is very well respected in Congress by members from both sides of the isle. He is a straight talker, truth teller and would be a great help to get things done in Congress.

Congressman Hunter is also a wonderful supporter of our Military. High on my list of favorites!

Newt is legions above any other consideration. Put it this way. Newt is a huge Trump supporter from day one. If Trump chooses anyone else, he would still benefit from Newt’s decades a Washingon wisdom in some capacity. Newt as Trumps VP would be catastrophic to the Liberals on all fronts. Newt is fearless, plain spoken and quite frankly, usually the smartest person in the room.

If Trump chooses Newt as VP, he wouldn’t need to waste his time with unknowns. If anyone could sell the Newt pick it would be Trump. Meaning, I didn’t hold focus groups to pick my VP. I cared about our country and sought the best person to compliment my attitude of getting things done. Newt got things done under the Clinton administration, he loves our country and he understands congress more than any sitting member. Newt is a Professor who loves our country and would take the Trump nomination to the level we have never seen in modern day politics.

Is that all you’ve got? You do realize that Trump has overwhelmingly won the primary.

The general electorate doesn’t even know who Nancy Pelosi is. Many will see this black and white photo and think, how dated. PEOPLE DO NOT CARE. If the lying media hasn’t’ learned that by now in this election cycle, then it will only help Trump more in the general. There were multiple memes Chris Mathews was trying to put forward last night on MSNBC, but he continued to be shot down be his own guests because his thinking is antiquated in the 24/7 social media new cycle. Voters will not care about this dated photo. LOLOLOL Get ready for people to start defending Newt in the media if he becomes the VP nominee. Why? Because Trump supporters are not playing. We want him to choose the best person to make our country great again, and Newt very much fits the bill. Keep bringing up the very dated photo that has ZERO impact on ACTUAL voters.

:)

I wouldn’t put too much stock in that photo...There are all kinds of pictures of politicians, celebrities, etc together, even though some actually hate each other...

Trust me -- If Trump were to pick an inside-the-Beltway hack like Newt Gingrich as his running mate, he'd lose about 20% of his support before he even gets to September.

Newt Gingrich brings nothing to the table for Trump's presidential campaign. He doesn't help win a swing state or a key demographic group, doesn't have positive name recognition, and doesn't bring anyone to the Republican column in November who wouldn't be voting for Trump anyway.

WRONG. Trump has never worked in Washington. He very much recognizes he needs the experience of a true blue American who has worked in Washington but isn't part of the RNC establishment, which Newt isn't.

People are being over handed in their attempt to argue that Newt shouldn't be the VP. Showing fear, which only confirms Newt would be the best shot gun VP in American history. GAME ON. 100 Days Trump/Newt 2017

It's not the photo itself that is the problem. It's the story behind it.

That was from a TV ad that Gingrich ran with Pelosi touting the threat of global warming. He was a paid shill for an "alternative energy" industry lobbying group at the time.

Newt Gingrich is exactly the kind of @sshole the Republican Party needs to purge from its ranks in order to win back the trust of its grassroots supporters.

But Sessions (while ideologically, great), doesn't buy Trump anything because Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia (at a minimum) won't be voting for Hillary. I'd rather see Trump take a good shot at firming up the West/Rocky Mountain states.

Susana Martinez would be a good pick on multiple fronts. A woman, to help defuse the "Trump is a misogynist" rhetoric. Hispanic -- ditto on defusing "Trump hates Mexicans". Border state governor -- strengthens his immigration stance. Executive experience -- though not Congressional/DC experience which is a Trump weakness. West of Texas -- helps in western states
