If any nomination winner wanted to win, they would pair with the number two vote getter. It is looking like that would be Trump/Cruz right now. However, I have never seen that done.
What I have seen done is the nomination winner picks someone so bad that no one would ever assassinate the President, knowing that the VP would then step up. In that case, it would be Trump/Kasich.
