Dallas struggles to overcome segregated legacy

DALLAS - By most accounts, census tract 166.05 is not a particularly desirable place to live. Tucked between two major highways in southwest Dallas, the neighborhood is characterized by clusters of ramshackle, one-story houses, huge swaths of vacant land and big warehouses and storage centers.

More than 40 percent of people living in the census tract have incomes below the poverty level, a proportion that more than doubled since 2000, according to U.S. Census data. Crime rates and levels of slum and blight are also high, according to the Dallas-based housing advocacy group the Inclusive Communities Project.

Such placement "perpetuates segregation," the group wrote in a strongly worded letter to the Dallas County Housing Agency in October. The vast majority of Dallas County's 4,200 rent-subsidy users are black, and they are being steered to "minority-concentrated, high poverty areas," the group said.

When we moved to DFW in the early 80’s we moved north into Denton. Corruption and stupidity reigned supreme at both the Coty Hall and County Courthouse. Te primary growth has been to the north in Dwnton and Collin Counties.

The Blacks that stayed in high school and went on to college have nice homes in all the suburbs that ring the government -subsidized slums in the center city. So who is to blame for the blight?

It has. Used to be, living in Collin County was like living on the far side of the moon. Now, people are moving into Fannin and Grayson Counties. These are counties in North Texas closer to Oklahoma than they are to DFW. This so they can stay as far away from the stench and government overreach of Dallas as possible. Developers prefer to build an hour north of Dallas rather than gamble and lose money on a project just a few minutes south of Dallas. Too many urban feral types with which to deal.

"segregated legacy"

The welfare system breeds generational poverty.

We should require welfare queens to be sterilized in order to receive benefits.

That sounds terrible. Hope it works out for you. One economically disadvantaged thug can kill people.

Ah, I did Rockwall for several years.

I did like it but it was just a bit too far, I was working downtown at the time.

And of course as soon as I moved there they tore up the highway which went on for years.

I finally moved back into Dallas, over in the Lake Highlands area.

Liking it a lot now-days.
