His felony conviction barred him from the Ohio House but not the U.S. House, so Steve Kraus has announced he will seek the Republican nod to challenge U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur next year.
The 9th District stretches along Lake Erie shoreline from Toledo to East Cleveland. Miss Kaptur, who has been in Congress since 1983, was re-elected in 2014 with 68 percent of the vote.
Kraus said his campaign will focus on the same things he did during his short tenure in the House, energy independence, job creation, and clean water. But given his recent experience with the justice system, he said he’s adding exposure of public corruption to that list.
“What do you do when you fall off a horse? You get right back on,†he said. “I maintain my innocence. My surprise victory [for the Ohio House in 2014] took out the chairman of the Democratic Party and the incumbent representative, something nobody expected. I believe that [the conviction] was retribution for that.â€
His appeal of his conviction is pending in the 6th District Court of Appeals.
Kraus narrowly upset incumbent Rep. Chris Redfern (D., Catawba Island) to take the 89th District encompassing Ottawa and Erie counties last year. It had been in Democratic hands for decades.

Kraus was expelled from the legislature after being convicted of felony theft. The circumstances and merit of the charge is unknown to me. Perhaps there are Freepers in Toledo who can enlighten us.
Marcy Kaptur is the only pro-life woman in the House Democrat Caucus, for what it’s worth.
I was born and raised in Toledo and Marcy Kaptur is great lady even though a Democrat. She has been around forever and really cares about folks.
If she’s truly “Pro-life” then what the heck is she doing in the Democrat Party “of death”??
Kraus was found guilty of fraud from evidence presented. He states he was asked to remove items from a house by realtor to have them inventoried at the auction place. Evidently, he took the items instead.
Marcy Kaptur got a ZERO from the ACU in its last ratings release for 2014. A perfect 100% leftist score. That made her the most left-wing member of the entire OH delegation. That anyone (let alone a Conservative) could offer a positive testimonial for someone with such a voting record is dumbfounding. 34 years in Congress at the end of this term, well past time for her retirement.
Vote for the felon, it’s important.
Kaptur isn’t pro-life, but she sometimes casts pro-life votes (sometimes unexpectedly. But her current district, which takes in not just Democrat Toledo but also white Democrat parts of Cleveland, is unwinnable for us.
The only pro-lufe woman i the House Democrat Caucus is Madeleine Bordallo, the (non-voting, except in committee) Delegate from Guam.
