Well, that's true, but health insurance certainly wasn't affordable (it still isn't... surprise!) unless you had a company plan picking up a nice piece of the premium...
Today almost all of Obamacare is subsidized to a certain degree...to make it "affordable"
I know if I had to buy insurance on my own paying the full boat, I'd be like a lot of people going to the hospital and stiffing the taxpayers at the moment to get health care...

Isn’t there some group you can join? I know that is a rotten solution, but the dreaded AARP services people only 50 or so, if I’m right.
I have a friend who retired from the same bank as I did. I chose the insurance offered by the company and she chose Blue Cross for herself as an individual and at a reasonable premium. She has the better plan. I don’t doctor much, but she does more than I and she couldn’t be more pleased. This is, of course, before POTUS “fixed it.”
