Sanders: We need 'sensible' gun-control bill

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is calling for "sensible gun-control legislation" in the wake of a mass shooting Thursday at a community college in Oregon.

"We need a comprehensive approach. We need sensible gun-control legislation which prevents guns from being used by people who should not have them," Sanders said in a statement. "We must greatly expand and improve our mental health capabilities so individuals and families can get the psychological help then need when they need it."

Sanders released his remarks after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning, killing 10 people.

The Vermont senator, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, added that the United States must also "tone down the incredibly high level of gratuitous violence" in the media.

"The shouting at each other must end. The hard work of developing good policy must begin," he said.

Sanders's comments echo remarks from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is also running for the Democratic nomination. Speaking after a campaign stop in Massachusetts, she called for "sensible gun control measures to save lives."

Any gun control legislation would face an uphill, if not impossible, battle in the Republican-controlled Congress.

A proposal to expand background checks from Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) failed to get the 60 votes needed in 2013 to overcome a procedural hurdle. A handful of the 54 yes votes were from Democratic senators who have since been replaced by Republicans.

Asked about taking up new gun control legislation earlier this year, Republican senators suggested instead that lawmakers should take time to reflect in the wake of a shooting, strengthen mental health services or crack down on cities that don't comply with federal immigration laws.

But Sanders suggested that Americans are "horrified by these never-ending mass shootings" and that Congress must try to "end this awful epidemic of senseless slaughter."

I'm guessing that Oregon already has strict gun control laws.

Ah... here it comes.. that word, “sensible.”

What is “sensible” to a Soviet Union-worshipping socialist is quite something else for the public at large.

A socialist pushing for gun control. What a surprise.

"Sensible" Gun Control Legislation to an avowed Socialist like Bernie Sanders = seizing everyone's guns.

Come and try taking mine, Bernie.

My idea of sensible is that you have the concealed carry people that don’t miss when they pull out their gun to defend the innocent.

Their idea is to disarm the vigilant citizen.

Lets try ‘gun-free’ zones. That ought to work.....

While we are are it, lets look to cities like Chicago and Washington DC as examples. Afterall, the politicians there said that their laws were ‘reasonable’.....(eyes rolling)

Sanders has had only one positive attribute: A relatively pro-gun record.

Looks like he's doing all he can to get rid of that.

Isn’t it nice how the media never calls them on it and makes them explain specifically what these ‘sensible’ gun laws would be?

“sensible gun-control legislation” SHOULD BE:

Deport (at least) criminal illegals

Ban “gun free zones”

Nationwide CCW law

Does this sensible land have unicorns and flying pigs too? Good luck preventing criminals from getting guns.

I agree in sensible gun control laws. First get rid of “gun free zones”. Second, require every capable citizen to own a gun.

OK, let’s have one sensible new gun law - legalize concealed carry in all 50 states so that people can protect themselves from these inevitable attacks by mentally ill people.

No Bernie what we need are guns not ending up in the hands of leftists trying to assist the current regime’s anti-gun stance.

LOL, I actually saw an article on Slate non-sarcastically calling Bernie Sanders a right-wing gun nut.

"We need a comprehensive approach. We need sensible gun-control legislation which prevents guns from being used by people who should not have them,"

Notice that it says "being used" not "owned" or "bought".

So how does "legislation" control a criminal's actions? We have a law right now that says "no murdering". That is "legislation" that should prevent the "use" of guns by people who should not have them.

Maybe he's just stupid.

What we need are no gun free zones. And nationwide concealed and open carry. The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy or gal with a gun. An armed society is a more polite society.

How long has this impotent little man been in the Senate? If he’s so qualified to lead, then just what is his reason that we don’t already have this sensible law already on the books?

Isn’t his calling for ANY new legislation really a confession of his ineffectiveness all these years?
