Between Pope Franciss visit and House Speaker John A. Boehners announcement that he would step down next month we got quite a lesson last week in grace and gracelessness.
The pope brought humility and genuine concern for the poor to Congress. The punditocracy soon reduced it to another round of partisan one-upmanship. (He talked about the environment, so take that, conservatives! Ha he mentioned the family, so stick that in your pipe, liberals!) Clearly these people missed the point and did not have the self-restraint to keep their obsessive partisanship to themselves.
Boehner (R-Ohio) left office in an effort to lance the boil in the House, keep the government open and try to remove himself as a bone of contention in 2016. In return, the perpetually smug Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) reveled in the triumph of destructiveness. The evangelical gathering at the inaptly named Value Voters Summit (isnt moderation a value? tolerance? gratitude for Boehners 25 years of service?) cheered loudly when they heard the news of Boehners political demise in a moment that made a mockery of the Golden Rule. People, this was a values summit, not a rudeness marathon. Donald Trump, the master of the insult and who despises civility, also applauded Boehners departure. At least the audience booed when Trump called Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) a fool.(continued)

Politics has gotten too political.
Those mean conservatives. Whaaaaah!
So we should be grateful to Boehner for his 25 years of “service “.
Why” It was the job he chose.
I wish I had such a cushy job-with the superb benefits that came with it.
Does he get a pension????????????
.
Especially his hypocrisy on doctrine, as evidenced by his refusal to condemn Planned Deathhood.
I’m sorry, but I consider Jesus my PERSONAL SAVIOR. Not to be saved through a ‘collective’.
The Author misses the point. He came here and was a Politician. He should have been the Pope. It took him 2 days to mention the name “Jesus” or “God”. For the leader of the Catholic Faith his visit was, to me, anticlimactic regardless of his ideology. He talked in riddles just as you expect a politician to speak. Give me a break—can anyone tell it like it is?
Politics: The ‘game’ of some.
The life and death of a country of many.
IT IS NO GAME. It’s a way of life, heritage and where the future will take us.
The only reason I stepped into this J Rubin fartfest is because you posted it.
I know I know .... need to keep up with what gas flavors the enemy is passing around. But she is afterall a ‘conservative’ in the finest tradition of the Washington Compost Methane Generator.
This woman is a Johnny one note with every article.
there’s been a cultural civil cold war brewing since the mid 60s... and it’s been getting steadily warmer
I keep getting her mixed up with Geoffery Toubin.
It was also reported that he state Jesus ‘failed’ at the Cross, in the human sense.
I’ll give him slack for language barriers and translation nuances and will remain respectful of his position and office. And I know there are many fine Catholics devoted to their Church and this is their leader. I will respect that.
But he worries me over immigration and global warming. I do not think our Lord would be touching those subjects. Francis is different, more political than spiritual it seems.
God forgive me that I ignore him.
He bought the house in Florida. M O N E Y in, money out.
The Pope “stepped into it”...Boehner, “stepped out of it”
That's laughable. Here's a man who parades around like somebody "divine", people bow down and kiss his ring, who presumes to impose his ignorant will upon ..... the world. That's a lot of things, but humble it is not.
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. (Matthew 23:9)
Not really a collective. The Catholic Church is extremely authoritarian and the pope has marxist views.
Boehner for saint.
Cruz is smug.
Trump is gauche.
Moderates are awesome.
At least she advocated sending Madam Clinton back to chappaqua. So she didn’t get it all wrong.
They were booing Rubio the clown.. not Trump
What has happened to our politics? Politics as usual just got trumped. Thank God!
Politics got too comfortable with our fat and lazy politicians. Obama’s robbing us blind and shredding our constitution at every turn and our spineless, gravy train GOPe politicians just let it go on and on and on. They thought they had the conservative grassroots whipped and did not want to rock the boat. Thought they could outlast Obama, get Jeb elected and let the gravy train keep rolling on.
But now Trump has come in and turned over all the money changing tables. He’s making great strides with we the people with his unabashed patriotic make America great again campaign and the ruling class is shatting little green wigglers. They have no weapons to put down a determined patriotic rebel with his own money and the know how and talent to talk directly with the people. He’s beating the media and the establishment at their own game.
Of course, they will find ways to effectively fight back eventually, so Trump is always going to have to stay a step ahead of them. He’s setting the pace and making new rules. And doing a helluva good job of it. The ruling class establishment is reeling. They’re way out of their comfort zone and they’re dazed and confused, but not quite out.
Praying Trump continues taking out the media and knocking off GOPe losers. Cruz is my favorite, but if he doesn’t make it and Trump does, I’ll enthusiastically support him.
