GREENVILLE, South Carolina (CNN) -- Sen. Ted Cruz and Rick Santorum on Friday refused to condemn Donald Trump for not taking issue with a man who, during a campaign event, called President Barack Obama a Muslim and said Muslims are "a problem in this country."
The two candidates instead slammed reporters for asking about the controversy.
The Texas senator refused to say whether he believes Obama is a Muslim, insisting instead that "President Obama's faith is between him and God."
Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, simply said "the President says he's a Christian" when asked the same question.
"Look, ladies and gentlemen I'm not playing this ... game that you want to play," a visibly aggravated Santorum said. "The President can defend himself. He doesn't need Rick Santorum to defend him. He's got you doing that very, very well. So cut it out."
Cruz accused the press of trying to goad candidates into a "foodfight" and refused to say how he would have handled the same question about Muslims in American and Obama's faith.
Instead, Cruz accused the media of trying to "stir up controversy," repeatedly refusing to address the merits of the questioner's comments about Obama and Muslims in America or whether Trump should have handled the interaction differently.
"You know, my focus is on my campaign," Cruz said. "I understand the press wants to get Republicans throwing rocks at each other. How about we talk about the challenges facing this country?"
Santorum insisted he wouldn't correct an event attendee's questions or statements, even if they were controversial or offensive, a response that echoed his comments following a similar exchange with a supporter in 2012.
"The questioner can say whatever he wants. It's a free country. He's allowed to say whatever he wants,"(continued)

When was the last time Obama claimed to be a Christian?
The MSM acts as if it would be an insult to Obama to think he is a Muslim.
The fact is, he’s had 8 straight Last Day of Ramadan celebrations in the White House, but zero Easter Celebration feasts.
When Obama stands in front of the Media and declares “Jesus Christ is Lord!”, then maybe he could be numbered among the Christians.
In the meantime there is no evidence to convict him of being a Christian and lots of evidence to convict him of being a Muslim.
Even if Obama did that, he still could be lying...

He could say nice things about Jesus, but he would never publicly declare that "Jesus Christ is Lord".

The reason the media plays this game, is they know the Republicans are scared of their own shadows and will bend over backwards so as not to be a target of media.

I have examined the PDF document I downloaded from the White House website and it contains at least a dozen separate "layers" used to make up the fake document. If it really was just a photocopy of the original long-form BC that it is claimed to be by Obama and the WH, it wouldn't have any layers, let alone a dozen. Some have counted more layers than the dozen. This document is a forged, fraudulent official document. If you or I had forged such a document, we would have been in jail a long time ago. And yet the president gets a pass.
The forgery is not even a good one. The person or persons who created it, didn't even know enough to "flatten" the image before saving it. If they had, It would have been very difficult to prove it was a fraud. But because it was left in layers, any amateur could separate the layers and show the individual parts that were used to create the final forgery.
I am not the only one that has come to this same conclusion. Within hours of the posting of the so-called BC on the WH website, hundreds of graphic amateurs and professionals reached the same conclusion.
The democRATS, the Leftist media and Obama's minions are all complicit in not exposing this fraud. To do so would reveal the greatest hoax in the history of the country, if not the world. Covering for Obama and this forgery, is as bad as the original crime itself.
Someone not running for POTUS should ask about Obama’s ring...

Absolutely! It is not Donald Trump’s, Rick Santorum’s, or Ted Cruz’s job to defend Obama. The media has already taken that as their full time job.
Trump, Cruz and even Fiorina have made it safe to get digs at the press. It’s long overdue.
