While thousands streamed into a football stadium Friday evening in Mobile, Alabama to see Donald Trump, a much smaller crowd of committed conservatives unwound at a bar and mused over the good, the bad and the unknown of the unlikely Republican presidential front-runner.
They were volunteers and staff for Americans for Prosperity, a non-profit group funded by industrialist billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, two of the most effective conservative activists in U.S. politics.
According to AFP, 3,600 people came to this year's annual Defending the American Dream Summit from around the country Friday and Saturday, taking in appearances by a handful of the 17 Republican presidential candidates. Trump was not invited...

More importantly, why would Trump want them?
He may not need them....but they were funding the tea party movement while he was cheering Obama and funding the Clinton Foundation.
Why would Trump want to be president? That’s what puzzles me.
Trump is being Trump, getting his agenda out on the front burner, at some point I think he may step aside and anoint his king.
At least this makes more sense to me.
I agree that Trump has said things that needed to be said and has raised the illegal alien issue. Beyond that I will wait and see what develops with the gentleman’s candidacy.
Sure, sounds good. But, afp has more of a business concern than for border security and stopping the invasion[yes, Trump could be a fraud, but those points are the issues of the age].
Why would Trump want to be President? I’ve pondered that one myself. It’s that one last mountain to climb to cap off his public life, maybe he actually does care about what’s happening to this country and thinks he can help turn it around?
Why would a man like Trump want to build up such a following only to screw them over and ruin public perception of him? For some other politician? Hillary? He’s said she belongs in prison. Sanders? He’s a businessman. What good would full-blown socialism do for his business interests, his children, grandchildren?
Running to win because he thinks he’s uniquely positioned to help turn the country around makes the most sense.
AFP is a Koch brothers operation. They support amnesty and open borders.
Another benefit of Trump’s candidacy is the “setting back on their heels,” the “elite political establishment.” They are having great difficulty in dealing with the gentleman. I like that!

And now he owns Jeb Bush as well.
AFP has lots of money. They have insinuated themselves into state and local politics buying politicians and activists.

I view Trump favorably at present but am not completely onboard, I have reservations. Where he’s been right he’s hitting it out of the park, though. I just don’t see all this as being an elaborate ruse to create an opening for some other politician, on either side. He’s playing to win it for himself, imho.

I agree with you. I don’t see him wasting his time, energy and money to be a stalking horse for someone else. He’s very frugal with his money. And, he’s also a very busy businessman. Some on here are convinced he is doing this so that Cruz can sail into the nomination. Why? What does he owe Cruz that he would waste all his effort to do this? It doesn’t make sense.

As it becomes obvious Trump will get the nomination, they will all come knocking at his door.
