Cruz Taps Fleming as Campaign's Texas Tea Party Chair

Ted Cruz's presidential campaign has recruited one of his home state's most prolific Tea Party activists, JoAnn Fleming.

Fleming, a longtime Cruz ally who backed his underdog bid for the U.S. Senate, will serve as the Texas Tea Party chairwoman of his White House run, according to a campaign source. A formal announcement was expected Tuesday afternoon.

"JoAnn is one of Texas’ most experienced activists and has a long record of leading the fight for conservative principles," Cruz said in a statement to the Texas Tribune. "She has been a supporter from the very beginning when no one thought I had a shot at even becoming a senator, and through her hard work and dedication we proved the establishment wrong."

"Under her leadership, I am certain we will see a groundswell of support from the grassroots in Texas, along with an army of volunteers and supporters to help us be very competitive in our home state," added Cruz, whose campaign is based in Houston.

Fleming is the executive director of Grassroots America, a Tyler-based conservative group whose backing is coveted in GOP primaries throughout the state. She also has chaired for two terms the Legislature's TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee. She most recently led Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's now-defunct Grassroots Advisory Board.

She’s a great choice. I know her in Tea Party circles. She helped him greatly during his Senate race and she lives in the same district and is an ally of Louie Gohmert.

Yes. Have coordinated with her for some time. A great pick. She can let Ted know how corrupt and open borders the Texas lege has been the last few sessions and what needs to be done to save this state.

Sounds like Ted might ought to have her be a "floating" campaign adviser, and have her work IA, NH and SC. If he does well in those three States, it could be all downhill then. I'D LOVE TO SEE LINDSEY GRAHAM LOSE THE SC PRIMARY. Anyone in SC care to tell us what the chances of that might be; realistically?

Cruz, whose campaign is based in Houston.

I love this.

Why? Simple. We have an out and proud Lebanesen woman as mayor. Houston is a cess-pool of blue, with Gene Green and Shiela Jackson-Lee, among so many others.

If Ted were to win the candidacy, and then the Presidency, from Houston? Oh, I may have to start claiming it as my “home town” again.

(Note, I was born, and lived in a suburb til joining the Navy, and now live in a rural community 35 miles away from Houston)

I’d like to see Perry drop out before the Texas primary.
