Handling the Trump in the Room
RealClearPolitics ^ | July 16, 2015 | Caitlin Huey-Burns

There’s an elephant in the Republicans’ room that just won’t budge.

Ted Cruz is trying to befriend it. Rick Perry is kicking at its shins. Chris Christie wants to pay it no attention without being offensive.

The elephant, of course, is Donald Trump. The image may not be quite apt—Trump’s Republican bona fides are suspect, indeed, and he’s hardly being ignored by the voters, media, and other candidates. Truth is, many would argue an ornery monkey jumping about the room, throwing things, and performing tricks for the onlookers, would be a better comparison.

Republicans, who have made a concerted effort to avoid this type of zoo, may consider Trump a nuisance, for but so far he cannot be contained—not by boycotts, not by media criticism, and certainly not by a warning phone call from the chairman of the Republican National Committee. Such efforts have only seemed to fuel his rise in the polls, placing him second only to Jeb Bush.

Whether Trump continues this upward trajectory or drops out of the race before actual votes are cast remains to be seen. What matters now is that he will likely be on the prime time debate stage in Cleveland next month, and he’s sucking up a whole lot of oxygen from candidates who need it most between now and then, when media attention is at a premium....

I think Ted Cruz’s Strategery is to support the Donald as best he can from a Conservative point of view, and I think this is the best stance for whatever may or may not happen in the foreseeable future. Jeb is not going to win over anyone smearing Trump.

I’m hardly establishment, but I think Trump is a liberal and a buffoon. For God’s sake, he supports a single-payer healthcare system - how are people ignoring that?

Because they like what they hear about illegal immigration and China. You and I know that Ted Cruz was already there, but Trump has a much bigger megaphone.

Trump is for American jobs.

There are now 94,000,000 Americans not working.

China is the top economy in the entire world, and growing rapidly.

Yet only Trump is for American jobs.

Explain that please.

Cruz is strong on jobs, despite what you hear from the trolls.

Yep. I like some of what Trump has been saying LATELY, but that’s just it. He’s said a ton of non-conservative stuff not just long ago, but even just in the last few years. Trump would be a good TV show host, hell maybe even a good Fox host with a conservative commentary if that’s his thing now...but President?

If that is true, he should talk about that topic much, much, much more than he is currently.

I’m completely series.

Trump is the only person anywhere, saying America needs to hire more Americans again.

The only one, anywhere.

W/ Donald at the top of the polls, other Republicans are reacting unfavorably:

John McCain is GOPeeing all over the Senate.

Lindsey Graham is having fainting spells.

Chris Chrisie is wasting his lapband w/ compulsive eating.

George Pataki is up in Dannemora looking for an escape route.

I’ve been reading his comments— even over the past few years— and find them to be quite good. His position on illegals, the Chicoms and Mexican government and his toughness in general make him a-ok for me.

Trump in his 29th June 1 hr plus interview with the Chicago Tribune is for going back to private enterprise healthcare. Trump wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with another Obamacare? LoL nope. And his plan to help the uninsured is another form of private charity.

Yep - and they as much as admitted that even a monkey can outsmart them - they should really think before they make such analogies....

When he’s on point, he’s way on point. When he’s off point, he’s way off base, like his cozying up to Hillary in the past and his pro-abortion comments in the past. Nevertheless, I’m glad he’s at least in the conversation to shake things up. He is the only one lately with the you-know-whats to say it like it is on illegal immigration.
