The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Friday legalizing same-sex marriage across the country has confronted the Republican Party with a choice: to rally the base by continuing to fight, or take the loss and move on.
Gay marriage is an issue where public support has grown with a speed unlike that seen on any other social question in modern history.
Opposition remains strong, however, among religious and social conservatives. That segment of voters is crucial to the GOP coalition and a key to victory in some of the early-contest states, including Iowa, South Carolina and much of the rest of the South.
The dilemma presented by the same-sex marriage ruling expressed itself almost immediately in the reactions from the party’s enormous field of declared and presumed 2016 presidential candidates. They ranged from defiant to pragmatic, apocalyptic to philosophical.
In each, there was a glimpse of how the candidates have mapped out their path to victory.
“I will not acquiesce to an imperial court any more than our Founders acquiesced to an imperial British monarch,” former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee said. “We must resist and reject judicial tyranny, not retreat.”
Huckabee’s comments reflected his background as a Southern Baptist minister, but also the fact that he is basing his campaign strategy on winning the Iowa caucuses, as he did in 2008, on the strength of his dominance among evangelical voters....

I got news for Ms. Tumulty; The GOP is already divided into (at least) two camps.... Probably more like ten camps, each with a couple of sub-camps.

As a side note to so-called growing public support for gay marriage, please consider the following. I wouldn’t be surprised if most voters are low-information citizens (including illegals) who have probably never been taught why the Constitution was written and how it works. Many people probably think that the Bill of Rights is the entire Constitution. I used to be one of them.

IMHO reigning in scotus is an even more important issue than same sex marriage itself. A constitutional amendment allowing states to decide about marriage, even if it passed (unlikely) would not prevent the court from making up law on the next issue. The Pubs should concentrate on a long term plan to pass a law exercising their powers under Article III to limit the courts jurisdiction to declare laws passed by congress unconstitutional. They could require scotus to get permission from Congress before taking any case on the constitutionality of any Federal law.

See how this works. A newspaper in Indiana picks up a story from WAPOO or the grey old witch some call the SLIMES. These are both touted as “papers of record” which means they’re preaching the gospel and you use them as your news “source”.
In the 4th century witches were burned at the stake. Once ISIS takes over that will happen again unless somebody beats them to it.
