State Rep. Scott Petri has formed an exploratory committee as he considers running for the 8th District congressional seat currently held by Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick.

Petri, a seven-term Republican representing the 178th state House district, said he has been “quite humbled” by the number of people “encouraging me” to seek a seat in the U.S. House.

Fitzpatrick, a Republican, has pledged to limit himself to four terms, which would take him out of the running for 2016.

This will be a top tier race and the ‘Rats will go all out to win after losing so badly nationwide in 2014. I don’t know much about Scott Petri, input from Pennsylvania Freepers would be greatly appreciated.

Term limit pledges are stupid, at least in competitive districts. Rats don’t make them.

They may be stupid, but more often than not, once they get past 3 terms in the House, they forget why they were elected and become a part of the problem.

You know who don’t forget how they got there? The legislative aides that end up running the show because their “boss” keeps changing every six years. Term limits result in even less accountability.

And as for unilateral term limits for our guys? Retarded. If candidates want to pledge that they’ll seek term limits for everyone, that’s fine and dandy, but unilateral disarmament only helps the Democrats.

I agree. Career staffers operating as a “power behind the throne” is the last thing we want. We could limit their tenure as well, but then perhaps nobody would no know what they were doing. We’ve never gonna have the Jeffersonian fantasy government of “Joe Citizens” that many freepers dream of. Running for office is hard, succeeding in office is hard. Realtors and Dentists with home made websites quoting the Constitution and Bible verses don’t win and are unlikely to accomplish anything if they do.

Back to term limits specifically, look at the Florida Leg, and Cali, everyone is term limited, FL has a new House Speaker every 2 years. It doesn’t seem to have any positive impact in either state.

If I were passing a term limit law at all it wouldn’t be a short duration one. More like a lifetime cap maybe. 20 years or something, to get rid of the dinosaurs.
