Why Europeans and Asian Communities Shake Their Heads at How Americans Choose Our Presidents.

Now that I'm back after some travels, I often wonder what my European and Asian friends will think of the upcoming 2016 Presidential race. On the Democratic side, they believe that Hillary Clinton appears to have the upper hand. However, somewhere out in Iowa, former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley is trying to build an insurgency to Clinton's left. On the Republican side, it appears that everybody under the sun is off and running, including moderates Jeb Bush, evangelicals like Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, Tea Partiers like Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, and Libertarians like Rand Paul.

In the end, most of my friends think that the race will boil down to another Clinton-Bush race, mirroring what took place in 1992. However, what drives my friends within many Asian and European investment communities batty is why our Presidential elections have become such a crazy reality show.

They're left puzzled why candidates spend so much face-time in places like Iowa and New Hampshire, locales with little industry, no financial industry, and fewer people. They often wonder why these farmers have an inflated importance. They're also left scratching their heads because when the primaries come to larger states like New York and California, the nomination is often a foregone conclusion....

I’d be screaming like a little girl after ten minutes under water lol. Our armed forces and what they give up are SO underappreciated and underpaid.

Would they like a quarter so they can call someone who cares?

Every country in Asia and Europe who has an older government then us please raise your hand.

Ok, Iceland and.... anybody else? No?

Europeans and Asians, like HUffPo editors, have no idea about separation of powers or the concept of (supposedly) sovereign states. Most of their non-dictatorship governments feature an executive made up of members of the legislative branch.

I think Europe and Asia should worry about Europe and Asia, very much so Europe for it is being transformed into a hellhole except for countries like Switzerland and some of the Nordic countries.

Fook them.

If they are so great, how come we are their outsourced world champion butt kicking country....

I could care less what Twerpope thinks....

Do they make anything we want? Uhm, nope.

Do they worship our presidents more less? Yes, cuz for sure we don’t even know who their leaders because it doesn’t matter.

What does matter is that everyone wants McDonalds, Starbucks, Apple, Levis, IBM, Coca Cola, Pizza Hut and a myriad list of American products.

Did I say Ford and Chevy?

"including moderates like Jeb Bush"

Has anyone EVER heard a journalist refer to a Democrat as a "moderate"? Of course not, because Democrats are considered by journalists to be "moderate" by default.

Parliamentary systems end up with the equivalent of John Boehner or Nancy Pelosi as the chief executive. Think about how many of our Speakers of the House would have made acceptable presidents and one can see the European problem.

Reminds me of my uncle, he always said, “Why do we always let a bunch of pig farmers (Iowa) choose our Presidents?”

Because most Iowans have nothing to do with pork production or any other type of farming? Other than a few weeks “walking beans” (weeding soybean fields) I never did anything agriculturally related in my time living there.

We’d all be better off if we chose our leaders by random lottery, I think.

Good points. I'd like to see a WWF (WWE) style of doing it. Put all the contenders in a ring and have them wrestle lumberjack style. If one is tossed out of the ring, they're out. The last one remaining becomes President. To add a twist, the Vice President is the last guy to be tossed out and maybe we can take the Cabinet from there.

How about Cannonball Run style? Have a car race from New York to LA and who wins becomes President, the second to cross becomes VP and so on. Now I could do that, I'd register my 2004 Hyundai Sonata in a second. B-)

How about a series of trials and events, both physical and mental, a decathelon if you will. Who wins becomes President and we go from there. Bruce Jenner in the White House, hmmmmm..... (rimshot! ducking) B-)

When I was working in Australia my mates were asking about our election process for president. It took me several hours what with questions and all .... they responded with trying to teach me cricket. A game that lasts for days ... but they do love American football.

Reminds me of the time when I had to explain The Three Stooges to a friend in Sweden.

Would have been fun if you could have done it like the Swedish chef from Sesame Street.

I’ll take President Camacho over what we have now, any day.

Well, I guess my uncle was a bit off, I’m surprised at all the companies that are there. To my uncle’s credit, he was a rocket scientist, he did work for NASA and serviced the electrical systems for the space capsules from Mercury through Apollo and the Space Shuttle. Even so, I do see his point, it is a lopsided way to choose a President, maybe we need a national primary day or as others said, we did better with the smoke filled rooms.

At least President Camacho, despite having a few (many) screws loose, was truly honest and upfront where he wanted to fix America. The one we have now wants to destroy America.

All I can say is that I pray hard it will not become another Bush vs. Clinton race, that’s so trite and “so 1992.” We need to do a lot better.

Put all the politicians in a ring with NAIL STUDDED CLUBS, the winner gets to be Pres for a year.
Sell the event on PayPerView and pay off the national debt.
