Sure, but they were not anything like the political class we have today. They were farmers, soldiers, doctors, merchants, and yes, some lawyers, but they retained their professions in most cases even while they served in government.

That’s the main difference. These men really saw their tenure in government as service to the nation, and not a profession to be used to enrich themselves and their cronies.

None of the republican contestants are so called Walmartians. They all are millionaires and some are multi billionaires.
