You guys have been somewhat misinformed. Yes there are Indians in Mexico who do not speak Spanish. Not very many. Yes, there are more in Guatemala.However, most speak and understand Spanish, even if on a rudimentary level. That's because Spanish was simplified on purpose in the 17thC to provide an easily taught entry level language for conquered people, and apparently American HS students. Of course, its challenges increase mightily after the entry level. But an upper-class Spaniard from Madrid might have a bit of a problem completely understanding some street guy from Havana, or Mexico City, but it wouldn't last long, and they would understand him at least enough to mug him.

East LA Spanish, well that's another story. That's "Pocho," sort of español's answer to Ebonics. It is the native language of Villaraigosa, the Mayor, whose Spanish is nowhere near as good as Geraldo Rivera's, which is laughably bad with a NYC accent ...Eli Wallach doing Mexican shtick.!
