Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) needs to stop defending the disastrous 2013 shutdown. The stunt he inspired was, for all but the Kool-Aid drinkers, a low point in recent Republican history. It plunged the party into a slump and allowed the president to divert attention from the looming Obamacare debacle. It was only after the shutdown ended by complete surrender that Republicans and the media could focus on the horrible Obamacare rollout.
The shutdown was so harmful that virtually no conservative not even Cruz recommends a repeat over the presidents executive order on immigration. So why is Cruz still belaboring the point? On Fox News Sunday, there was this exchange on GOP remedies in response to the presidents executive action:
CHRIS WALLACE: But youre willing to shut down departments and youre willing to take the backlash? I mean, it didnt work very well with Obamacare, sir.
CRUZ: Well, let me point on you, you notice, at the time, you and a lot of folks in the press said what a disaster it was to stand up and fight on Obamacare. That it was going to cost Republicans the majority. It was going to cost seats.
Let me point out, we just had an historic election where we won. Its going to end up being nine seats in the Senate. We retired Harry Reid. Weve got the biggest majority in the House since the 1920s. And the number one issue that candidates campaigned on was Obamacare.
Now, listen, it was a mistake for President Obama and Harry Reid to force a government shutdown, but it was not a mistake for Republicans to stand up and fight on Obamacare....

Don’t let those mind games fool you. It was a tremendous success. Just listen to them squeal.

I hope it gets “shut down” again. You could fire at least 1/2 of the Fed workforce and no one would notice.
At least half...
Nope. Ted's got more common sense and more objective moral truth on his side than most of the people in DC combined.
He don't need to get in no liberal line.
Disasterous as in they now have signifcant majorities in both houses of congress?
I mean, not that it matters, but yeah, they do have that.
What shutdown?
The one where a bunch of elderly veterans were inconvenienced?
The one where a few open-air parks and monuments were closed at a greater cost than what would have been if they were left open?
The one where a few bureaucrats got a paid vacation for a week or so, with the pay delayed for a bit?
The one where a few supplicants had to wait a week or so to get something from a Federal Government Office that is unconstitutional in the first place? ?
1) Jennifer Rubin receives note from Obama media department.
2) Jennifer Rubin reads note, adds name to story as her own, publisher publishes.
3) Dupes everywhere read as objective opinion.
4) Ted Cruz elected President because Freepers during "Day of Reckoning" nation wide protests introduce all Americans to a great American Ted Cruz.
Freepers, we have to shine now!
Get Off Your Ass!
It was SOOOOO disastrous, we won the biggest majorities in generations. I see the logic here.
I’d like for Rubin to explain what all the smart people did in the past 12 months to drive such a big turnout in November 2014...was it signing off on the Democrats version of the budget with military cuts in exchange for paying the Obamacare spending? Was it the clearly defined goals set forth by Boehner and McConnell? (there was none)
Maybe it was the reinvigorated conservative movement that started at the exact same moment that the shutdown happened. Just maybe.
It is almost Thanksgiving...and I was trying to be kind and reasonable.
Eddie01, I’m already warming up my dialing finger to raise that $2 million for his candidacy.
Because of the shut down we won in a landslide. We want shut down. We love shut down!! Shut it down!! But don’t sit on your thumps taking no action against the monarchy!!
bttt
Learned nothing?
Ted Cruz - not a member of the surrender caucus
He is also correct that the shutdown didn’t hurt the 2014 midterm elections where the Reps realized historic gains. Every Rep Congressional candidate ran against Obamacare. So where’s the beef?
All but the Kool Aide drinkers?? Stopped right there. How many seats did we lose from the shutdown 11 months ago?
Pray America is waking
Exactly. If these reporters believe it is fine to attack our motives and tactics, then it should also be fair game to investigate reporters and determine whether they may have an agenda.
There has been too much of this going on the last few years to attribute it to establishment group think.
Yeah that shutdown really lead to an election debacle, didn’t it? Wow.
