As a Democrat, Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu is running up against the late stages of partisan realignment. But while the rise of the GOP in the South may end her political career, nobody has ever confused Landrieu for a political neophyte, or accused her of misunderstanding the essence of Louisiana politics.
Its against that backdrop that she attributed President Obamas unpopularity in her state, in part, to the fact that the South has not always been the friendliest place for African Americans.
As regional or cultural dog whistles go, this is significantly less contestable than, say, the GOP's incessant derision of northern and coastal values. But it has provoked a backlash, not just from conservative pols and operatives who have created for themselves a state of denial in which racial politics dont really exist, but also among professional political analysts, who believe Landrieu made an error by alluding to the Souths racial history in public...

Complete horse shit.
You just think that because you can’t hear the “regional or cultural dog whistles”!
It wasn’t a mistake. It was a tactic of desperation.
Commie lib hippies. Still living back in the 40s and 50s.
An inadvertent bit of truth here. The author has bought into the "Southern Whites are all racist and history proves it" narrative and doesn't appear to recognize how very bigoted that really is. But it isn't really truth that he's after here. It's finding "other ways to juice black turnout", and never mind if they happen to be a bit suspect, bigoted, racist, manipulative, or simply wrong. It's all about agitation.
It’s definitely worth reading the whole article. New Republic is a good source for mainstream progressivism. The people frequenting such sites might be worth the effort to try to turn a bit right.
See a small community inside the St. Louis metro...
Well, in a pinch, one could always print the article up and use it as toilet paper..
You’re on to something.
New Republic, just like a Brave New World written in 1931 by Aldous Huxley, that says it all. Notice the word New. It is always used as if the outcome will be better, more refined, more efficacious. Nonsense.
A generation goes, and a generation comes,
but the earth remains forever.
The sun rises, and the sun goes down,
and hastens to the place where it rises.
The wind blows to the south
and goes around to the north;
around and around goes the wind,
and on its circuits the wind returns.
All streams run to the sea,
but the sea is not full;
to the place where the streams flow,
there they flow again.
All things are full of weariness;
a man cannot utter it;
the eye is not satisfied with seeing,
nor the ear filled with hearing.
What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there a thing of which it is said,
See, this is new?
It has been already
in the ages before us.
There is no remembrance of former things,
nor will there be any remembrance
of later things yet to be among those who come after.
Ecclesiastes 1:4-11
According to Mary “You will be absorbed” Landrieu, the state that elected a dark skin Indian for Governor is now racist for not wanting to vote for her because she supports Obama.
Simple liberal, rat logic.
What an idiot. The only time the South wasn’t friendly to African Americans is when the dimorats, the KKK, and other bigots like the author were in control. Republicans have always fought for and believed in the inherent worth of ALL human beings.... to be free from government and other impositions
What about the truth that during the KKK days and Slavery, the DEMOCRATS were in charge!
This is also true.....somehow I don’t expect it to get mentioned.
Hee, hee, hee....I get to wake up about 5am tomorrow morning, get ready for work, stop by my polling place around 6am and vote against this fat, ugly commie, skank. I can hardly wait!!!! Col Rob Maness....all the way!!!
A vote for Maness is a vote for Mary.
So the New Republic is saying that black people should vote for the party that founded the KKK, instituted Jim Crow laws and poll taxes, and overall were racist motherf***ers.
Obviously her target audience was African Americans, not Caucasians.
