Regular readers will know that Im a critic of the My opponent said something objectionable and Im outraged! school of campaigning, not to mention the Candidate said something objectionable! school of campaign coverage. One of the most important rules in assessing gaffes or outsized statements is that if the moment was extemporaneous, out of character, instantly regretted, and not repeated, then we should give it a pass, because it probably reveals next to nothing about the person who said it.
Having said that, theres a new statement we learn about today from Iowa Senate candidate Joni Ernst that deserves some scrutiny, and Ernst ought to explain it.
The Huffington Post has the news:
Joni Ernst, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Iowa, said during an NRA event in 2012 that she would use a gun to defend herself from the government.
I have a beautiful little Smith & Wesson, 9 millimeter, and it goes with me virtually everywhere, Ernst said at the NRA and Iowa Firearms Coalition Second Amendment Rally in Searsboro, Iowa. But I do believe in the right to carry, and I believe in the right to defend myself and my family whether its from an intruder, or whether its from the government, should they decide that my rights are no longer important.(continued)

Its true, government is our worst enemy..
What’s to explain? The statement was clear and concise.
I don’t live in Iowa, but she’d have my vote if I did.
She’s made a statement that, rather than meekly submit to the dictates of a tyrannical government, she’d instead exercise her rights of self-defense as guaranteed in the Constitution.. a perfectly acceptable position. Any constituency that would take offense to that is not a constituency worth representing.
As if those offended would have been voting for her in the first place.
They are pulling out all the stops against her.
I have never seen the like of some of the disgusting ads being played
As Reagan said, government isn’t the solution to the problem, government is the problem. We now have the government that the founding fathers feared.
She knows how to castrate too.
The Rat Bastids know this much, they have already pulled off what should have brought on their overthrow by any means and it is only by lying and deceit that they have succeeded to this point. THAT is why they fear our firearms and the 2nd A.
The key phrase in her statement is “if my rights are violate or not protected”. What does write Waldman want? All of us to submit meekly to trampling of our constitutional rights?
Yes. Yes he does, actually.
Sounds like COMMON SENSE. What did the Polish Underground do in WW2? What did the Jews wish they had done before and during WW2? What did millions of Russians, Chinese, Cambodians, etc. wished they had done when being tortured and then shot?
Unlike the WIMP in North Carolina, she’ll have no problem getting her base out in this election.
the author is a moron.....

Fetishize?
These clumsy propagandists always try to layer in a just a little more smear. At some point, it becomes transparent to any objective mind.
To me, one of the most important things we should teach our kids in school is how to recognize such authoritarian tripe, critically analyze it, and then explain to our countrymen how it is being used to manipulate public opinion and ultimately undermine Liberty.
Did the founding fathers “fetishize” guns, too?
Read the Federalist papers...
That’s funny. I don’t need her to explain her comments.
