Michelle Obama rallies Democrats in Detroit; 'We're better off today'

DETROIT, MI - First Lady Michelle Obama told a Detroit audience Friday "we are better off today than when Barack first took office," as she rallied the crowd in support of Michigan Democrats up for election in November.

The first lady, stumping for Democrats around the country, cited historic economic growth, higher graduation rates and health care availability as signs the country is headed in the right direction. Democrats are campaigning to retain control of the U.S. Senate in November, though Republicans are mounting a strong challenge to takeover both chambers of Congress.

In Michigan, Democrats are trying to hold retiring Sen. Carl Levin's seat by electing Rep. Gary Peters, who is being challenged by Republican Terri Lynn Land. The party is also trying to knock off Gov. Rick Snyder with former Congressman Mark Schauer.

Michelle Obama told the capacity crowd at the Detroit Music Hall that Peter and Schauer "refused to walk away from workers here in Michigan," adding that her husband's accomplishments came from Democrats in Michigan and across the country.

"Barack didn't do all that just sitting alone in the Oval Office," Obama said.

We are better off in Michigan than when Obama took office but its a relative thing after the devastation of the lost decade under Granholm. If we had a decent administration in DC things would probably be booming across the state. Nobody can name a damn thing Obama has done for Michigan let alone Detroit.

All the good that’s been done in Michigan has been done in the 6 years the GOP has had control.

You have to understand, she was referring to her and barry, and the two of them are most definitely better off today living large on the taxpayers dime, lavish parties and vacations all for FREE!

I was amused this morning at the *liberal* CSpan caller who complained that the current governor had raised his taxes. Wanting republican policies but demanding liberal spending on social justice do not compute

Unfortunately low info freepers and their simple minded responses continue to help the democrats by concentrating on the negative rather than looking at the good the GOP has done here.

-Isn’t he just showing the economic disaster of Detroit?

Seems pretty obvious to others.

Instead of voter ID in Detroit, they should have to present proof of a paid water bill.

They are better off today but its due to republican policies. Someone should have forced the bankruptcy years ago but thank God Rick Snyder did it.

Democrats would have continued kicking the can down the road for decades and let the debt grow and grow like is happening all across the country.

Bankruptcy allows for a clean slate and its attracting a lot of private money. For instance, the Packard plant has been sold, back taxes paid, and new construction going on now. Engineers say that around 85% of the buildings are salvageable despite outward appearances. Urban industrial living and working is a hipster thing and they bring big bucks.

The point is that there are good things happening but none of them are because of the democrats and only idiots allow the democrats to take credit for them.

Glad to hear it. Just declare it a 1% property tax zone for 20 years, and imagine the possibilities.

While I don't much care for the taxpayer funding portion, I do think it will be good for the city to have the Red Wings new arena right there with Comerica park and Ford Field.

Gotta be hundreds of “fixer-uppers” in Detroit. Any day now, we should see a “Flip Detroit” show on a cable channel.
