Vulnerable Kansas Senator: We Are Heading Toward 'National Socialism'
Talking Points Memo ^ | September 23, 2014 | Dylan Scott

Posted on 09/23/2014 5:54:24 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS), who is facing an unexpectedly fierce challenge for re-election, warned Monday at a campaign stop that the United States is heading for "national socialism."

It's not clear whether Roberts intended to make a reference to Nazism or simply meant to invoke the run of the mill looming specter of socialism.

American Bridge, the liberal opposition research group that tracks Republican candidates, posted the video of Roberts's remarks at a Dodge City event.

"There's a palpable fear among Kansans all across this state that the America that we love and cherish and honor will not be the same America for our kids and grandkids," Roberts said, "and that's wrong. That's very wrong."

He lamented that people are "losing faith in their government" and that the government "is losing faith in our people. That is a bad situation to be in." He said he was running to change that dynamic.

"We have to change course because our country is heading for national socialism," Roberts said. "That's not right. It's changing our culture. It's changing what we're all about."

According to TPM's PollTracker average, Roberts trails independent candidate Greg Orman by 1 point, 39 percent to 38 percent.

UPDATE: 2:20 p.m. ET

The Washington Post's Philip Rucker asked Roberts about the line Tuesday.

For those keeping track, Roberts repeated "socialism" line
this AM. I asked him if he believes Obama is a socialist
and he said "yes."

No, we already have National Socialism and the Republicans helped impose it.

And he's going to keep admitting it right up to election day!

After the election, is he going to help implement it, or maybe I should ask, will he help in the final implementation?

Say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos.

Admits it?

He is one of many RINO’S who enabled this socialism to set in
by their inaction or unwillingness to fight.

Roberts is part of the problem, not the solution.

He is one of the senators with email lists of whom I have subscribed to. While he is happy to talk about the pork he brought home, he at least is a) pro-life, b) anti amnesty. He is better than the other choices KS has right now.

What has Roberts done to fight this big Government that threatens our nation?

He must have done something or he wouldn't have an 86% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union.

What's Orman going to do fight big government?

How many more radical liberal judges will be with us four times longer than Roberts remains alive if Harry Reid and Democrats continue to control the Senate?

fter he wins, he’ll go on back to DC, and do what he’s been doing for years(virtually nothing)

You mean like voting against Obamacare? One more 70-something "RINO" voting in the Senate in 2010 and Obamacare wouldn't be the law today.

No, we already have National Socialism and the Republicans helped impose it.

We didn't have socialize healthcare and every single Republican opposed it. But, it passed because people like you let enough Democrats into the Senate to have a super majority.

Boy, I’m glad he’s not one of those crazy Tea Party types, or this would be ALL OVER the news.

Rove would see to it.

(He’s right, BTW.)

First of all, a long-time incumbent garnering only 38 percent in a poll is horrible. Methinks Roberts-dude is T-O-A-S-T! Secondly...............

39 + 38 = 77. Where in the world are the other 23 percent of the voters? If they say “Undecided”, that’s really bad news because, rule of thumb, 3 out of 4 “Undecided” voters go for the challenger on Election Day.

Yep; and knowing this will be his last term (He’ll be 84 when his term ends.) he will prolly never set foot in Kansas again. Why should he? He has nothing there.
