Democrats try out a new/old bogeywoman: Sarah Palin

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is out with a new ad Monday tying Iowa GOP Senate hopeful Joni Ernst to Sarah Palin.

The 30-second ad plays audio of Palin praising Ernst and Ernst praising Palin.

Given that Palin is broadly unpopular and highly polarizing, the ad might seem to be much ado about nothing. After all, Palin has been a Democratic foil for years. But national Democrats haven't actually used her much in their advertising campaigns. And, in fact, this is the first TV ad the DSCC has ever run featuring Palin.

The committee did feature Palin in a 2009 Web ad, and SEIU mentioned Palin in an ad against Scott Brown in the 2010 Massachusetts special election. Apart from that, though, Palin hasn't really been used in the same way as George W. Bush, Nancy Pelosi and President Obama — the most oft-used bogeypeople (?) in political ads.

The use of Palin in Iowa certainly makes sense. Ernst touted her Palin endorsement heavily and campaigned with the former Alaska governor while securing the GOP nomination, and there have been plenty of comparisons drawn between their political styles. Much as Palin did in 2008, Ernst has run as a gun-toting mother who can relate to average Americans/Iowans....

In the end, they'll always tell you who they fear. Mitt Romney endorsed Joni Ernst, too. Where's that ad? And ever notice that she is pretty much the only vice-presidential nominee described as "failed" or "failing?" That's because everyone know that it's the standard-bearer who wins or loses a presidential contest, not the running mate. Ever see Jack Kemp, Lloyd Bentsen or Joe Lieberman described as "losing" or "failed" VP candidates? Of course not! But they can't help themselves, just like their breaking their own rules to call Michael Brown a "youth, teenager, boy, teen, youngster" and etc. when, at 18, he was a full-grown man.

I don’t see how Sarah Palin could be an adequate shield to hide obama. You’d need something more on the order of a Grand Canyon.

Their typical “isolate,...,destroy” tactic on Palin will only lead to the “next Palin” being MUCH MORE aggressive and vigorous in identifying just who the enemy is and what needs to be done about them. Like pool balls careening around the table after the break events the libturds have set in motion are now almost out of their control. Like Ceacuscu, they may learn to their detriment haw dangerous that loss of perception can be.

Ernst should counter with an ad showing Palin correctly predicting the Russians would invade Ukraine if Obama was elected.
