In a Breitbart column insisting that Ronald Reagan was not as assertive as commonly believed on military and foreign policy issues, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) mentions, in passing, I met Ronald Reagan as a teenager when my father was a Reagan delegate in 1976.
.
But his father, Ron Paul, is hardly a Reaganite today. Indeed, he is now claiming that Crimea has a right to leave Ukraine and join Russia, and that U.S. sanctions against the Russian regime are criminal.
Thats just people looking to start a war, Paul said. This is criminal, its stealing and will just aggravate things and escalate things. Sanctions are acts of war to freeze assets if youre at war with Hitler and theres a declared war, thats a little different, but to do this so easily and casually as we do, thats just looking for a fight.
In a story about these extraordinary comments, U.S. News & World Report said that Senator Paul does not seem to share his fathers position on Crimea. It noted that, in a February 28 statement, Senator Paul said, The United States should make it abundantly clear to Russia that we expect them to honor the December 1994 Budapest Memorandum, in which the U.S., Russia, and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their commitment to respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine.
...
On February 25, the senator had sounded like his isolationist father, saying to The Washington Post that he believes the United States should seek respectful relations with Russia and avoid antagonizing Russian President Vladimir Putin. Post reporter Robert Costa quoted Paul as saying, Some on our side are so stuck in the Cold War era that they want to tweak Russia all the time and I dont think that is a good idea.

Crimea has been part of Russia for over 200 years and was partially given away in 1954, it’s still Russian.
Alaska was purchased for an agreed upon price and paid for.
Actually, the Tatars were there before the Russkies starting shipping people in. And there are also lots of Ukrainians still in Crimea. Furthermore, the “Russian Unity” party only had 3 of its members in the Crimean parliament, and their “Prime Minister” only became a Prime Minister when he was escorted into parliament surrounded by people armed with machine guns and grenade launchers and declared a quorum.
Under these situations, with an occupying army, it’s BS to claim that Crimea is “willingly” wanting to do this or that.
People forget this fact.
I was actually surprised when I found out Sevastapol WASN'T Russian. Guess I play too much Diplomacy.
Putin logic is similar to the Texan logic. When Santa Anna overthrew the Mexican gov and made himself dictator, the Texans refused to recognize the illegitimate gov and declared independence. When the Ukrainians overthrew an elected gov in Kiev via mob rioting, the Russians in Crimea simply declared the new gov in Kiev illegitimate and will declare independence and eventually join Russia. If it is okay for TX to separate from Mexico and later join the US due to a military coup against an elected gov in Mexico City, now we are against the Russians in Crimea for using a similar logic to leave Ukraine?!!!
If Paul is pushing this he's insane. Guess the GOPe RINOs and libertarians have hatred for Reagan in common.
Crimea will be part of Russia...as it should be.
Obama and his minions are playing with dynamite by threatening sanctions on Russia.
Russia might be able to engineer the death of the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency....this would be a disaster of biblical proportion.
The yuan might become the petro trading currency along with the rubble.
So Putin isn’t President Jackson invading Mexico, he is some guy living in 1835 Mexico and rebelling?
“now we are against the Russians in Crimea for using a similar logic to leave Ukraine?!!!”
Don’t include me, I think Crimea should be Russian!
With Dems War on Education, is It Any Wonder Students Don't Know History?

How do two "different" people find a Breitbart article interesting enough to post, and, then, post the same article to FR at the EXACTLY same time?
This happens a lot...My questions are: Why? And... How?
How about this..let Crimea decide who they want to side with? That is about to happen, if it is an honest vote that is.
just what did Russia sell ?
Alaska
We just took no. California.
and Alaska
Alaska was purchased at an agreed upon price.
Almost nothing but still a price that was agreed upon.
It's still a sore spot with them.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Obama "give" Alaska back to the Russkies (after the elections, of course).
I don’t know. But in this case it was coincidence. I just got my freerepublic account yesterday...
The US only purchased the Russian-American Company. The rest is up for dispute.
