It wasn't a guess, exactly. But Ivory Small, a forecaster for the National Weather Service, was relying on experience as much as science recently when he called for sunny skies across Orange County.

The key computer models that form the basis of forecasts disagreed. One said it would rain. The other said it wouldn't.

The paper has a nice diagram and detail on the Aqua satellite. Has three key instruments: the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) , Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) and Humidity Sounder for Brazil (HSB).

Builder is TRW Space and Electronics , Redondo Beach, CA Size is 26 feet, weight is 6,484 pounds, Electrical power is 4,600 watts, solar panels , orbit is polar at 438 miles high, life span is 6 years. I'll see what else Google can find for me!

In a single day, AIRS can collect the equivalent of 30,000 novels worth of data.

Gee, isn't that a "novel" system for measuring a volume of data? I can't wait to start reading them...

Any time that science can refine its method of data gathering and refine their process of data mining, they tend to change their forcasts.

Maybe this will make global warming disappear, and refine the bogus equations currently in use. When was the last time someone talked to you about the ozone hole? It was all the rage of the environmentalists years ago.

The more we know, the stupider we feel.
