Older Men Make Better Lovers, Psychologist Says

LONDON (Reuters) - Older men are better lovers and have fewer impotence problems than their younger counterparts, with the "male menopause" a myth pedaled by drug companies to sell their products, according to a British psychologist.

Dr. Lorraine Boule, from Sheffield University in northern England, told the British Psychological Society conference that men became more skilled sexually as they get older, British newspapers reported on Saturday.

"Older men sustain erections for longer, are longer coming to orgasm, and satisfy women better. Sexual activity does diminish with age, but the quality should get better," she was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

Boule's conclusions were based on a survey of 185 married professional men aged 30 to 60. While 22 percent of men under 46 suffered erectile problems, only 16 percent of those over 46 did.

She dismissed as nonsense the idea that men needed testosterone as a hormone replacement therapy in the same way that some women take estrogen to ease the effects of menopause.

The male menopause was a myth spread by drug firms to boost the multimillion dollar market for impotence treatments, she said.

"Life should really begin at 40 for those who have the right mindset," the Times quoted her as saying.

Will this study HOPEFULLY diminish the pervasive onslaught of erectile dysfuntion commercials on the radio?

Gag...those make me want to throw things at the radio and television. It seems nothing is sacred. Kids growing up today must assume that adults are incapable of thinking about anything other than sex.

Tis true but there's still that old problem of youth being wasted on the young.

The study is based on using British Male Subjects. The lifestyle, and stress upon that of a UK male is different than that of a USA male. Interesting study. But, the conclusions are flawed.

Yes we last longer. But there is a delay in the "recharge" period. No more encore 20 minutes later.

Hormone levels in men also lower as they get older. Is there some kind of "male menopause"? Probably not, but many men can be helped by use of hormone replacement. Do drug companies probably overuse this fact to try and sell drugs? Probably. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen, now does it?

Agree, agree, agree. I thought, though, that 'male menopause' was more a fantasy dreamed up by women who did not want to be the only ones with hormonal problems.

If the drug firms are behind it, then they are likely working on products to treat the increase in prostate disease that the unnecessary use of testosterone will produce.

"No more encore 20 minutes later."

But if you do it right the first time, an encore isn't needed....

Not to be unkind, but I have long felt that the primary reason many men have more difficulty having sex as they get older is that they are foced to have sex with women who have also gotten older. Most men I know are turned on by a woman's physical attributes: firm, flat stomach; high, fulsome breasts; a well-turned butt; etc. So, as age takes its toll on the woman, it takes its toll on the man. (And viceversa, I'm certain,)

In short, in many cases, the best cure for erctile dysfunction is a gorgeous young blonde (or brunette).

Helped in what way?

I agree that some men are testosterone deficient, but they are a tiny fraction of men to whom testosterone is promoted and who experience a gradual decline in levels. There may be an effect in normal men who take testosterone, but is that a different phenomenon than the effect in normals who experience increased alertness with amphetamines or increases muscle mass with anabolic steroids? Are they 'amphetamine deficient' or 'anabolic steroid' deficient?

I think not.
