This is still an issue? Whatever we may think of this child's opinions, SCOTUS decided the legality of this nearly 60 years ago. The school can't win, and I'm surprised their counsel hasn't apprised them of that.
Unless they think they can get SCOTUS to overrule itself, which seems unlikely, first off. And second, shouldn't be undertaken at taxpayer expense, in any case.

This appears to be from 4 years ago. Got anything more recent?

Durkee disagrees with the pledge because she doesn't believe in God, thinks the government is corrupt and that American society is too violent. I'll defend her right the think and say whatever she wants. Now let me remind her that she is free to leave.

To Captain Black, every officer who supported his Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade was a competitor, and he planned and plotted twnety-four hours a day to keep one step ahead. He would stand second to none in his devotion to country. When other officers had followed his urging and introduced loyalty oaths of their own, he went them one better by making every son of a bitch who came to his intelligence tent sign two loyalty oaths, then three, then four; then he introduced the pledge of allegiance, and after that "The Star-Spangled Banner," one chorus, two choruses, three choruses, four choruses. Each time Captain Black forged ahead of his competitors, he swung upon them scornfully for their failure to follow his example. Each time they followed his example, he retreated with concern and racked his brain for some new strategem that would enable him to turn upon them scornfully again. - from Joseph Heller's Catch-22

The school is run by not very bright people. Like the article said, it turned her into a rockstar. The worst thing you can do to a student like this is to ignore them. They aren't doing this because they're making a stand. They do it for the attention. Tell the girl she has to stand when all the other students are reciting the pledge. Why waste the school board's money.

Uh...this is from 1988? It hasn't been decided/settled by now?
When they say "Extended News," I don't think they mean extended four years in the past.

What is the purpose of posting this article from 1998?

To avoid further punishment, she now stands while the rest of her class recites the pledge. More civil rights violations. It would be reasonable to let her suffer from "peer pressure".

I didn't mind the date / time stamp on this one bit, I found it a vivid example of the kinds of Un-American American's we still have within our borders today.
Is it just me or is it getting alittle warm in here?? :)

I have no problem reciting the pledge cause I love this country .Bill Clinton has no problem reciting the pledge cause he loves to lie.
If you don't want to pledge ,well thats okie-dokie by me. You can walk off your way ,and I'll politely wave goodbye to you. Under my breath however ,I'll say, "WHAT THE HELL ?"
