20,000 children recruited in Pak madrasas for jihad

Around 20,000 children below the age of 18 were enrolled by Pakistani madrasas to fight in Afghanistan over the last few years, according to the Child Soldiers Global Report of 2001.

The report, which covered the status of child soldiers in 178 countries, has been brought to the notice of the Pakistani government, the secretary general of Pakistan chapter of Amnesty International, Ahmed Detho, said.

The report cited case studies of madrasas in Pakistan town of Quetta where all madrasas sent their students to aid Taliban even after US-led coalition began its fight against the fundamentalist regime, the Dawn reported on Wednesday.

The Child Soldiers Global Report also quoted the Pakistan government's estimates which said only one per cent of madrasas sent their students to fight along with Taliban.

You may be pleased to know that there is an Islamic school and bookstore in my town that displays a large US flag in its window. This school does get voucher money, though it had been in operation for some years before opting to accept voucher students.

I presume that the word "madrasas" is well known to the people from India. However, I'm not sure what Pakistani madrasas are?

Can anyone help, nobody in my trailer park knows who (or what) they are.

Madras is the name of a City in India and I don't think it has any meaning.
Madrasa in Arabic(?) means "Islamic school". Taliban means "student", referring to the graduates from these Madrasas in Pakistan.
