NBC Stands by 'West Wing' Creator's Bush Bashing Updated 3:15 PM ET February 26, 2002

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - NBC said on Tuesday it stands by Aaron Sorkin's right to speak his mind, following ``The West Wing'' creator's recent comments that the country is pretending that President Bush is competent and brave.

``Obviously we respect Aaron's right to say whatever he thinks,'' Jeff Zucker, President of NBC Entertainment, said in a conference call with reporters. ``We would never get in the way of his right to speak his mind.''

In an interview for the new issue of The New Yorker magazine released on Monday, Sorkin said it was appropriate for the country to lay off on the ``bubblehead jokes'' during Bush's ''war on terrorism,'' but that the news media had gone too far.

Sorkin also pointed the finger at a special program on his own network, NBC, titled ``The Bush White House: Inside the Real West Wing.'' Sorkin called the show, hosted by NBC chief news anchor Tom Brokaw, a ``Valentine to Bush'' for making the president look good.

``The White House pumped up the president's schedule to show him being much busier and more engaged than he is and Tom Brokaw let it happen,'' Sorkin said in the article.

While NBC stood by Sorkin's right to speak out, the network took exception to his characterization of the special, noting that Brokaw prefaced the show by saying that Bush's schedule was loaded up for the occasion.

``Aaron and Tom spoke last night,'' Zucker said. ``Aaron apologized for getting that wrong.''

NBC is a unit of General Electric Co. .

I am proud to say I have never even seen one episode of this crappy show. How do I know it's crappy? You don't have to dive into a cesspool to know it stinks.

Please identify a show you consider "non-crappy" enough to deserve your viewership. Like tens of millions of other viewers, I wouldn't miss an episode of "West Wing" whether they ridiucle the WH idiot or not.

1) They didn't have to say that he wasn't allowed to speak his mind, only that he was WRONG.

2) If this man had said something like "Martin Luther King Jr. was a fraud and a demagogue, and those who idolize him are worshipping a figure with feet of clay," what do you think NBC's response would have been?

Yes, MurryMom, but you're...MurryMom. It is in your standing orders that you MUST watch such programs, just as you must light candles before the "Bill 'n' Hill" altar each night.

The rest of us realize what utter tripe "West Wing" is. I watched five minutes of one show about a year ago. That was enough for me.

I can proudly stand by your side on this one - never watched it, never will.

As a side note, I am probably the only person in America that has never seen any of the Star Wars movies either - nothing personal, just never got around to it...

Two items for you there MurryMom:

1) West Wing is a fake show and caters to the lowest level, emotionally driven politicos.

2) The "WH idiot" and his wife moved out over a year ago after stealing all the furniture in the place.

Idiot. Nielson rates WW at 15.2 million. Hardly the "tens of millions" stated. Perhaps it is the WWing druggie connection that intoxicates you?

Frankly I'm too busy to revolve my life around a show, no matter how good it might be. I sort of got into The Sopranos but I could never figure out when they are on as HBO is constantly re-arranging their schedule. So I ended up getting the first two seasons on DVD and can watch them at my leisure as my schedule permits. But when I do have time to turn on the TV, there are some excellent shows on History Channel and the occasional good movie on IFC (Independent Film Channel).

No thanks to a wretched show with a liberal agenda, that was created by Hollywood to try to give weight and substance to the Clinton Administration.
