AN IRANIAN-BORN former beauty queen is working as Germany’s conservative cheerleader in an attempt to quash accusations of racism and attract the youth vote in an increasingly tight election race between Gerhard Schröder, the Chancellor, and his right-wing rival, Edmund Stoiber. Last year she was voted Miss Bavaria, this year Sheila Malek, 21, is running for a council seat in Munich and devoting most of her spare time appealing to the youth vote, particularly in areas of high immigration. As the ambitions of Herr Stoiber gain momentum before September’s election, the ruling red-green coalition has accused him of xenophobia over his immigration policies. Young, beautiful and intelligent, Fräulein Malek is confounding the critics and Herr Stoiber is soaring in opinion polls. In the latest Forsa poll, Herr Stoiber led with 40 per cent support compared with just 34 per cent for Herr Schröder. Taking into account Liberal Party (FDP) support in a possible coalition government, Herr Stoiber, the Bavarian Premier, won a total of 50 per cent of the vote. It marked the first time in more than two years that a major opinion poll showed the conservative and FDP together in a position to win a majority. Herr Stoiber has not shied away from the tough question of immigration, saying that his party would implement stricter entry requirements should it gain office. Accusations of racism are laughed off by him and by Fräulein Malek. The former Miss Bavaria admires Herr Stoiber, the 61-year-old leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), despite a leaden attempt at levity at his birthday party last year. Dressed in a short black skirt, she agreed to burst, Marilyn Monroe-like, from his birthday cake. Herr Stoiber, a man whose idea of a really good night is studying immensely weighty documents on health or pension reform, was not amused. He attempted a smile but it was a strain. Nevertheless, the medical student has remained loyal to the party and officials are overjoyed to have a campaigning Iranian-born German pitted against the charming, Clintonesque populist Herr Schröder. The CSU is the Bavarian sister party of the national Christian Democratic Union, which has chosen Herr Stoiber to unseat the Socialist-Green alliance in the September 22 poll. “You know,” she said, “I really believe in the CSU values so it’s not as if I am trying to sell a product just to make money or to get on. I happen to think that its policies are what are needed.” Muslim by birth, campaigning in the most trenchantly conservative and Catholic state in Germany, Fräulein Malek sees nothing strange about her situation, campaigning for a party that wants immigrants to work and be part of society. “It’s not as if the CSU are Nazis. The things they advocate are the things I believe in too: work for all, no unregulated immigration without end. There has to be a balance in all societies. Germany has been good to me and I see this as my way of giving something back too.” She was nine months old when she came to Germany with her middle-class parents, fleeing the wrath of the Khomeini revolution in 1979. She was brought up near Munich by her mother Xeria, but she does not talk about her father. She said she had a normal upbringing and was exposed to many influences in school, leaving her with no adherence to Islam. After completing her Abitur, the equivalent of A levels, she was persuaded by her friends to compete in the Miss Bavaria competition, which she won. She joined the CSU as a teenager after attending a local meeting near her home. She said she was keen to learn more about it and to see if she could contribute to it. Last year she spent most weekends touring the picturesque Bavarian villages in the foothills of the Alps as part of her official duties. Now she spends most evenings giving speeches in youth clubs and meeting halls aimed at getting the youth vote out on September 22. She said: “When I was Miss Bavaria there wasn’t much talk about politics. You were supposed to just stand there and say you wanted world peace like a good little beauty queen. I have had many people ask me if I get any ribbing or criticism from friends because of my beliefs in the CSU. I have to say not. There are many in the older generation who think you should be a communist or something when you are young but the ideology of the Left has never really appealed to me. “I believe in free enterprise because I think that is what makes societies work. Immigration is a problem and you can’t pretend that it isn’t. It must be regulated because we are all in a limited space and we all need to get on with one another.” Now she is studying chemistry, biology and Latin. Planes and trains await her to rush her for weekend meets in Bavaria, to a crowd eager to hear beauty speak about the beastly world of politics.
