News Desk adds: Sources said the video tape received by the US Consulate a few days ago showed Pearl interviewing some one when an unidentified person pulled his head back from the hair and severed his head with a knife. The consulate was trying to establish veracity of the tape for the last few days.

Not long ago,perhaps here on FR, someone linked to a scientific study,regarding the post mortem effects on the body after death by guillotine. There were a lot of anecdotal reports of the facial movement after separation. It was a gruesomely fascinating article.

Yup. I read about an experiment conducted by a person that was guillotined. He had friends there to record how long after his head was cut off that he could continue to blink his eyes, 15-20 seconds.

This is supposed to have been the scientist Lavoisier, who was guillotined. I don't think it's clear if this particular story is true or apocryphal. But there are apparently many anecdotes from the French Revolution regarding continued consciousness for several seconds after a beheading.

I believe the media should state the true method of Pearl's killing. The American public should know the truth. All we have now are rumors. They should be confirmed or, if false, the true method should be stated.

However, the pictures should not be broadcast. Nor should similar such pictures be placed on FR; post a link if you must. We're entitled to the facts, but we're also entitled not to subjected to the grisliest of images. (Respect for the family also says that the pictures should not be made public.)

I believe congress did pass a law making it a Federal crime to commit acts of terror against US citizens on foreign soil. Whether or not the country in question would consider extradition under any type of treaty we may have with them...I don't know.

I know the circumstances are a little different, but we did sort of demand the extradition of UBL from Afghanistan, and you see the results of their failure to comply.
