U.S. officials told worried senators and aid groups yesterday that the government was working to fully revive its program to admit refugees, which has been crippled since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"We are moving aggressively to resume that process," said James W. Ziglar, commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on immigration.

He pledged that the immigration service would make a "better than good-faith effort" to reach the ceiling of 70,000 refugees the Bush administration had agreed to receive this fiscal year.

Whew! For a while, I was worried that the illegal immigrants that the INS is finally 'getting tough' with might not have a loophole to use. Thank Goodness!

What are they worried about? That the US might stop taking in the world for a while? Don't worry Mr. Kennedy, we'll have a billion soon, then I'm sure you'll sleep good at night.

What is the process?

Do they have to apply abroad, or can they just show up at a U.S. airport and say "refugee", as they can in Canada?

There is a huge difference in the potential numbers.

From the tone of the INS officer, it looks like he might be terrified into letting anyone in, just to make his perceived quota.

PING ) ) ) )

Do you see now why some of us "Right Wing" "Frothing at the Mouth" types have some concerns with the diligence of the Government of the USA to protect the CITIZENS at the expense of feel good immigration policies??

I've finally figured it out. The only difference between Al Gore and George Bush is that one of them uses vaseline.

Just what foreign government does this guy work for?

Oh, that's right: The United States "foreign to American interests" government.

I suppose that means more "refugees" like that scumwad Soltys, the California murderer who just hanged himself in the slammer.
He claimed he was fleeing "religious persecution" in the Ukraine.
Hey, at least he was "non-Muslim", right? < /sarcasm>
