It means Defense Condition. 5 being the lowest and 1 meaning war is imminent. The US military is usually set at 4, I don't believe the government has ever officially acknowledged a Defcon 1, Pretty sure during the Cuban missile criis we were at 2....although I could be incorrect about that.
Islam celebrates two great festivals annually - Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. The first is the great festival that follows the month of Ramadan when the fast is broken. The second occurs about two months later during the month of Zil-Hajj when an animal is sacrificed in commemoration of Abraham's sacrifice of his son. This festival is incorporated in the great pilgrimage to Mecca which should properly be made during this month but it is also observed all over the Muslim world at the same time. The underlying importance of this festival is the spirit of sacrifice (qurbani) in memory of Abraham's great act of faith many centuries ago.
Eid-ul-Adha is, according to Islamic teaching, a time for Muslims to learn the value of self-denial by making a sacrifice of something living to God. It is stringently denied by most Muslim theologians that the sacrifice has any further significance and it is especially denied that religious sacrifice has any atoning or propitiatory value. Abraham's great act of submission is thus regarded solely as an example of genuine surrender to the will of God and is to be followed as such.
I meant something more specific would help. Be on alert for what? What are we suppose to be watching for? It's like saying there's a _______ comming in the area of________ at________o'clock.

I think that they are not trying to tell "us" anything. I believe that these "alerts" are messages to the terrorists saying that we know what they're up to, and that their "people" talk. As far as I am concerned, these "alerts" don't give me any idea what to do. At least with weather alerts you know to go to the grocery store. :)

I kinda doubt that their is any major significance to todays date in Muslim religious circles, otherwise a Muslim Freeper would have already pointed it out. The connection to the 212 area code is a logical avenue of thought, however. Like 911, its phone related, easy to remember. Thank goodness there isn't a 1/800 date on our calendars.

Alert: Roughly equivalent to Dare
High Alert: Double Dare
Very High Alert: Double Dog Dare
Highest Alert: Triple Dog Dare
Very Highest Alert: Put your head between your legs and kiss your a$$ goodbye.
Your weather watch/warning analogy is probably a good one. They've been in place for years, and people still don't know what they mean.
