Daschle: Stimulus Bill Appears Dead
AP ^ | 2/5/02 | CURT ANDERSON

WASHINGTON - The economic stimulus bill that President Bush says will hasten recovery from recession appears dead in the Senate and will probably be shelved, Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle said Tuesday. Daschle, D-S.D., said neither Republicans nor Democrats will have the 60 votes necessary to win approval of their competing measures — and that the Senate will take up other business on Wednesday.

"It's with great regret I will pull the bill tomorrow," Daschle told reporters Tuesday.

Yep, you are so right MrCraig. It's that last great hope - trash the economy, so that somewhere, somehow, this will be the light at the end of the tunnel that helps their Dem friends win. Too bad it's not a light at the end of the tunnel though... 'cause it will turn out to be an on-coming TRAIN! --Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch! So sad.

The tax on your income is the same before and after the tax rebate checks. It has no effect what-so-ever on your refund. It is simple math. The tax rate before the rebate is 15% and the tax rate after the rebate is 15%.

I guess the argument is one of symantics. From your IRS guidance: The law also created a new 10% tax rate on the first $6, 000 of taxable income ($ 10,000 for a head of household; $12,000 for a married couple). To give people this tax cut more quickly, the law directed that most taxpayers would receive this benefit as an Advance Payment check in the summer or fall of 2001. The checks were based on the taxpayers' 2000 tax returns. Thus, most people have received the full benefit of this change, and it will not affect how they complete their 2001 tax returns.

While the tax tables haven't changed (still 15%), the 10% rate was created by way of the 'Advance Payment check'. If I had not received the $600, I would have received it as part of my refund this year. You're right, you wouldn't reduce your refund directly (when you calculate your overpayment) since it is already taken into account.

"Too bad the unemployed whose benfits expire, will not get 3 more months of saftey net.."

i'm one of these. my benefits run out in two weeks. using my email "spammer" tool i've sent email to over 3000 companies across the company. (my "spammer" tool allows me to personalize the emails so they don't know it's spam). i've had some interest from companies, and traveled to Chicago and Seattle for job interviews. i should find out in coming weeks whether i have any offers from this collosal undertaking. meanwhile, my unemployment runs out. lucky for us we have been able to move in with family, have given our car back to the bank, etc. etc. so we're not going to starve to death when our unemployment stops, but i know there are people out there not as lucky. i'm one of those white-collar high tech workers who have gone from 6 figures to nearly nothing; unfortunately all the mcdonalds jobs are taken.

"Daschle, D-S.D., said neither Republicans nor Democrats will have the 60 votes necessary to win approval of their competing measures"

it takes 51 votes to win, dasshole.

I kind of like this "tit-for-tat" threatened by Chaffee. I say we call his bluff. If he fliches, the Reps are back in the majority; if he jumps to the Dems, the GOP is better off anyway.

Invoking "cloture" is the only way to stop a filibuster. Cloture requires 60 votes. Basically, Daschle is saying that you need 60 votes to force a vote on the bill, because without 60 we will filibuster it preventing a vote. His rule is that on a "controversial" measure, you need 60 to bring it to a vote, essentially assuming that a filibuster is already ongoing or inevitable. I think his motivation results from the knowledge that filibustering an economic stimulus plan is a sure political loser.

Trent can't. The majority leader determines what reaches the floor and what doesn't. If Daschle doesn't want the bill to reach the floor -- which would force the Dems to filibuster -- it won't.

Gee I wonder how all that trash got to be law during Lott's tenure? Motor Voter comes to mind, for one....

President Bush can now say with absolute authority and unequivocally that Daschle does not want a good economy. Dumbo Daschle just handed the President a gift.

"Remember that zealots would rather kill everyone rather then yield power. The hard core Democrats are zealots."

True -- true.
What the 'Rats specifically are, as you already know, are hard-core Socialists.
Socialists who've never been this close to their goal in the history of the ideology.
Good Gawd; America's the one crown jewel that up until 1992?
They couldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

Of course, the media changed all that.

Truth is?
It wasn't as-if ol' James "Cue Ball" CarVILE didn't warn this nation what'd happen IF the Right made a move for power?
I believe he used the term, "Scorched Earth"?

I'm just curious to one day learn whether or not the Right ever took his threat(s) seriously; or, blew 'em off the way they've been know to do to their base?
Methinks they didn't listen very closely; not based on attitudes appearing on this BB, alone.
Old Serpent Head didn't already make good his promise, either.
He's making it good right now; a, "Work In Progress" could we say?

Yea; you're damned right the Socialists will destroy this nation; long before they ever relinquish whatever power they now hold.
People don't want to accept that fact?
Fine & dandy with me.
People are free to whistle past the graveyard of their choice as far as I'm concerned.
But, whistling they are, nonetheless.

...or as someone once said, "It's a WAR, stupid!"

F69, If I remember right, Daschle passed a stimulus bill for himself and his cronies in Congress with their raise. Another Marie Antoinette. Tommy Daschle says,"Let 'them' {US} eat cake." Actually bread. Peace and love, George.

Am I the only one that's confused here? Dashle had a competing stimulus plan, and he 'pulled' it from the Senate floor. Okay, but what does that have to do with Bush's stimulus plan? What happened to that? Anyone?

Rush re-mentioned this and he has a point. Dasshole's tenure as majority leader is the illegitimate tenure. The people of the US, by way of elections, put a GOP majority in place. Because Jeffords decided to jump ship, our votes were thrown out.

Jeffords took it upon himself to essentially negate the vote of anyone who did not vote for a democrat in a senatorial election. Doing this after the election amounted to nothing less than a coup. Now we are paying because the GOP made nice & said "Thank you, come again!" after Jeffords screwed the voters of ths country.

I hope Vermont has to pay $5.00 a gallon for milk. (Sorry, I know there are good people in Vermont--don't want them to suffer).

Wrong. Your tax was 15% of the first 45,200 before the rebate
and was 15% on the first 45,200 after the rebate.

What ever you call it, it can not be called a rebate. The tax rate
did not change, so you will pay the same amount as you would
have before. The $500.00 can in no way be called a rebate.

Next thing we know, you will be saying a surtax(remember those)
is not a tax increase. :<D
