I like the 2ns one - where Giuliani is talking into the camera after taking of his glasses. He really seems to like Simon and respect him.

I saw this story in the San Jose Mercury News about Bay Area coverage.

http://www0.mercurycenter.com/partners/docs1/082360.htm

"The first GOP gubernatorial debate is open only to invited guests but will air live at 7 p.m. Tuesday on KNTV-TV (Ch. 11), KGO-TV (Ch. 7) and KQED-FM (88.5). KRON-TV (Ch. 4) will air the debate at 10 p.m. "

I presume that means most stations in the state are broadcasting it.

Don't listen when the liberal media & party hacks tell you Dick Riordan has a lock on this race -- Bill Simon is already proving them wrong. Go Simon!!

Tuesday's one-hour debate will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on television stations in all of California's major markets. During the face-off, the candidates will be seated, facing a panel of three Northern California journalists, rather than standing at the traditional podiums.

Go Simon? Bill Jones is the only Republican to be elected to a state-wide seat. California Secretary of State, Bill Jones, should have the full backing of the state and national Republican parties. Riordan is a Democrat and Simon just has money. www.billjones.org

Simon received the endorsement of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Group yesterday in part because Bill Jones helped push through the largest tax increase in California history. Simon got the endorsement of some COPS group, Rudy Giuliani and the California Pro Life Council before that.

Bill Jones campaign was long ago dead. This is a Riordan-Simon race so pick a side. The choice is easy - Simon For Governor!

While Jones may be a nice guy, why should be elect him as Governor just because he's already in statewide office? That's a "it's my turn" mentality that doesn't wash when faced with the facts:

*Jones pushed through the largest tax increase in 1991 as Assembly Republican Leader. If that's the kind of leadership he's proposing now, I don't want it.

*Jones has never been a leader on conservative issues like guns and abortion; in fact, he was quoted in the Sacramento Bee saying that while he considers himself pro-life, he wouldn't rule out taxpayer funded abortions.

*Jones endorsed George W. Bush, then when the race was heating up switched his endorsement to John McCain. If he can't be trusted to keep his promises and commitments in the Republican Primary, can we trust him as our Governor?

*Jones has never been a good fundraiser, and while he comes off as a nice guy -- and he probably is -- he's also boring and unmotivating. Not the kind of guy to rally the troops against Davis.

Bill Simon is a realy conservative, has stood up for his principles against all the pundits who say he's too conservative to win. He's smart and articulate and a good speaker. He can motivate people now and in November. And, although Jones has been in office forever, Simon has put forth far more detailed and conservative minded policy proposals on taxes, the budget crisis, transportation, and a host of other issues.

I'm sorry Jones career is over, but that's not a good enough reason to nominate him in March. He would simply lose in November.

This is the #1 reason Jones is LAST on my list.

So far only KFMB (Ch 8) in San Diego mentions it on their web site that I've found. Oddly, they don't mention that they are actually going to show the debate only that it'll be broadcast in the major markets here in CA. They might broadcast on their radio station AM 760 which supposedly can be heard statewide (the following is at both the radio & tv news sites):

REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE DEBATE

(01-22-2002) - The first debate will provide many voters with their first glimpse of Secretary of State Bill Jones, former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan and businessman Bill Simon.

The primary is March 5.

A recent poll by the Public Policy Institute of California shows four out of ten likely voters still haven't decided who they'll choose on the ballot.

The Republican hopefuls also are trying to woo independent voters, who can vote for any party in the semi-open primary.

Political analysts say the debates are particularly crucial for Simon and Jones, who trail front-runner Riordan in most polls.

Tuesday's one-hour debate will air at 7:00 p.m. on TV stations in all of California's major markets.

A second debate will be held February 13 at Cal State Long Beach.

The primary winner will challenge Democratic Governor Gray Davis on November 5.
