Dingell: I'll Grill Rubin on Enrongate Calls

Michigan Congressman John Dingell, the ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said Sunday he intends to call former Clinton administration Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin to testify in upcoming hearings into the collapse of energy giant Enron.

Dingell was asked by "Fox News Sunday's" Brit Hume whether he intended to question the former Clinton official after reports of his involvement in the scandal surfaced on Friday.

"If you watched me when I ran investigations, and I ran a lot of them and they were very, very effective, we had everybody in and we saw to it that we got all the facts," Dingell said, before adding, "Absolutely, yes."

Late last year as the energy giant was sliding into the financial abyss, Rubin reportedly attempted to intercede with the Bush Treasury Department.

Administration officials now say Rubin pressed Treasury Undersecretary Peter Fisher to contact credit agencies in an effort to persuade them not to cut Enron's credit rating.

Fisher told Rubin that such an action would be inappropriate, raising questions about why the Clinton administration financial czar involved himself in the first place.

Hey, didn't ya hear? The new line is that Rubin was just calling the Bush administration to give them a "heads up." I'm sure that will satisfy Dingell.

This whole thing could have been avoided if we had real reporters out there, instead of a bunch of gossip mongers. God, I hate the press.

The article does not give the whole skinny on what went down when Hume introduced Dingell to the idea that Rubin, too, had received a phone call from ENRON and proceeded to make some phone calls to the Treasury Department on their behalf. Dingell had NO choice at all but to agree to call Rubin before his committee. This was not something he volunteered before being cornered by Hume!!!!

Unless the RATS recently took over the House it's not Dingell's committee, that committee is chaired by Tom Bliley. I would think Bliley would do the calling, there's a certain something about democRAT calling another democRAT that bothers me. It's a bit strange that all this coverage is given to people like Dingell and Waxman when they are NOT the committee chairs.

Yes, it will be pretty interesting. I think they are going to find that their hardest job will be in trying to distance themselves from Clinton's involvement in the Enron mess while at the same time trying to pin the blame on "Bush Administration Officials". They are caught between Bill Clinton and a hard rock. And Clinton doesn't mind taking a chunk out of their keester every chance he gets.

And besides all that, Begala and Carville said that Rubin wasn't calling an administration HE was part of, he was just calling about Citigroup. (Like that makes a difference; but, of course, the Clinton administration DID make phone calls like that; ask what's his face, Babbitt.

It'll be very interesting to see how far each side wants to go with this issue. About the first two hours will tell the tale. Hope somebody televises the shows (and they may well be just that!)

Did you hear Rush say today that R. Rubin was Daschle's advisor in the Senate for the recent tax cut/ Bush demonizing effort? Rubin's Citigroup is Enron's top creditor, they would know Enron's financial state. Was Rubin advising Daschle to pull the energy bill? They had to know the effect of that on the energy sector, and the effect of Enron's demise on the overall economy. When did they hatch this diabolical scheme...the day Jeffords jumped?

How low would these Dems. go...dissing the Pres. on a lie during war when our enemies are watching, the coalition's fragile and we NEED our own energy sources for national security reasons...there's no lower left to go.
