Iran Arming Lebanese Terrorists With Anti-Aircraft Missiles (IsraelNN.com) Iran is supplying terrorists in Lebanon with US made Stinger anti-aircraft missiles according to a New York Times report quoting US intelligence sources.

The report states that classified information proves conclusively that Iran purchased the missiles that might be used against US aircraft.

American expects some time ago warned that anti-aircraft missiles given to Afghan rebels by the CIA may now be used against the US.

INTELLIGENCE

Report Says Iran Gave Terrorists U.S. Arms

By JAMES RISEN

WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 — Iran purchased American-built Stinger antiaircraft missiles in Afghanistan in 1994 and turned them over to a Lebanese-based terrorist organization, but the missiles proved to be defective, according to United States intelligence reports.

Iranian agents then conducted further negotiations in Afghanistan for additional Stinger missiles, according to another intelligence report. It is not known whether the Iranians were able to buy any more of the advanced shoulder-fired weapons.

The classified reports, which were provided to The New York Times, offer the first evidence that Iran had ever purchased the missiles, or that it had ever given them to terrorists who were considered willing to use them against American aircraft.

For years, many American analysts have warned that terrorists might be able to get some of the missing Stinger missiles the Central Intelligence Agency supplied to Afghan rebels in the 1980's when they were fighting the Soviet Army. The fear has been that terrorists could then use the weapons against American or Israeli aircraft, perhaps including passenger planes.

A United States official confirmed the reports today, but stressed that there was no evidence that the Stingers obtained by the Lebanese-based terrorist organization, the Islamic Jihad, actually worked.

The documents report that in September 1994 an operative from the Islamic Jihad, an offshoot of Hezbollah, went to Tehran to receive the shipment of Stinger missiles, considered among the most dangerous weapons in the American arsenal. United States officials say the Islamic Jihad has conducted a series of terrorist operations against the United States and Israel since the 1980's, with the backing of Iran.

The C.I.A. began supplying the Stingers to Afghan rebel groups fighting the Soviets in 1986, and the missiles played a crucial role in the outcome of the Afghan-Soviet war. After losing several aircraft, the Soviets were forced to curtail their use of air power, a shift that helped turn the tide of the battle.

When the Soviet Army withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, the United States ended its support for the Afghan rebels as well. But when the Americans left, many of the Stingers remained unaccounted for, left behind in the hands of warlords across Afghanistan.

Ever since, the C.I.A. has had a secret program to recover the Stingers from Afghanistan, but in recent years American officials have estimated that as many as 200 have not been located. American Special Forces and C.I.A. officers operating in Afghanistan since Sept. 11 have tried to track down the missing weapons, but it is not known whether they have had any success.

The missiles that the Iranians delivered to the Islamic Jihad operative had been purchased in July 1994 in Afghanistan by agents from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, a militant Iranian intelligence agency, according to one of the intelligence reports. Later, after the Iranians and Islamic Jihad discovered that the Stingers did not work, Iranian operatives contacted the representative of an Afghan warlord to try to open talks about buying others. But the Iranians were told that the United States had learned about the 1994 missile purchase, complicating any further negotiations, according to an intelligence report.

According to one of the intelligence reports, Fuad Shukr, a Lebanese- based operative for the Islamic Jihad, traveled to Tehran in September 1994 to pick up the shipment of Stingers.

At another point, according to the report, agents from Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security also tried to buy Stingers from the government that ruled Afghanistan before the Taliban came to power in 1996. That effort was apparently unsuccessful.

It is unclear exactly what made the Stinger missiles defective or what happened to them once the problem was discovered, although there are indications, the intelligence reports say, that they were returned to the sellers. But in July 1996, according to the reports, operatives from the intelligence ministry approached an Afghan who represented Ahmed Shah Massoud, a leader of the Northern Alliance opposed to the Taliban.

Although Mr. Massoud had not been involved in the 1994 sale, the Iranians asked if his organization could sell 6 to 10 Stingers, according to an intelligence report. But the Iranians were told that the United States had found out about the 1994 sale, thus making it difficult to hold any further sales negotiations.

Mr. Massoud was killed on Sept. 9, two days before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and American officials have said they believe he was murdered by Al Qaeda operatives sent by Osama bin Laden.

We've must have developed missles that cannot be used to harm US planes. Surely it would not be difficult to design a mechanism 'which would cause the missile to explode prematurely if it was locked on one of our own.

It was well known, long before September 11, that the Afghans still had, or had passed on to others, some 200 Stinger missiles. I presume that's why our bombing campaign was conducted so carefully.

The presumption is that TWA 800 may have been shot down by a stinger missile, although according to other accounts the Chinese have modified the Stinger to give it a longer range, and one of those modified Chinese missiles might have been used. This remains speculative because of the FBI cover-up. It's also possible that the plane was downed by an American missile during fleet exercises.

It would not surprise me if we have a microchip in the Stingers which will allow us to disable them if fired at U.S. aircraft. I have no technical knowledge of this but it was discussed a few years ago on a bulletin board.

"The presumption is that TWA 800 may have been shot down by a stinger missile, although according to other accounts......"

Naw. TW 800 may have been brought down by a shoe-bomber though. There were trace amounts of C4 residue reported early in the TW 800 investigation. The residue was "explained away" by the FBI, who attributed it to an on-board test of search dogs looking for explosives. THAT was ridiculous.

Considering what Reid tried to do, we need to re-look at what really happened to TW 800

New Stingers now have IFF to avoid hitting allied planes, provided they are both set to the same code. Don't know what the shelf life of the batteries or fuel is either, but the Chinese/Russians/North Koreans et al probably would have gladly upgraded or refurbed the ones they still have.

I've read, somewhere, that non-US Stinger variants are available and that most, if not all, of the Stingers the US supplied to the Mujahadeen would now be inoperable. While I don't know if this is accurate information, it seems to me likely that Iran would purchase newer non-US air to ground copies of the Stinger in any event. If their intended targets are slow moving and not very maneuverable commercial aircraft even the crudest copy would probably do the job.

I'm always reluctant to accept the idea, dear to the hearts of those who didn't think the Soviets were all that bad, that sending the Stingers to Afgahanistan was a big mistake. While I understand some Stingers were inadvertently sent after the Soviets were already on the way out with their tails between their legs, it's clear the decision to supply Stingers was one of the major reasons the Soviets did throw in the towel in Afghanistan.

The other problem with the Stingers (besides their age) is that they don't go that high. With the JDAM's being guided by GPS, US planes are bombing from incredible heights compared to past wars. Even missiles that go high enough take so long to get there that our pilots can evade.

Hi...found something in the book of Isaiah.
The covenant of ABRAHAM in genesis..is sort of the guideline,or blueprint to everything.
From this covenant..God promised to reveal himself ..both to the Jew..and the Gentile.
Israel returning to the land triggers release in our understanding...as mentioned in the book of Daniel.."Things are locked up and sealed...until the endtimes"
It has been raining and snowing in Israel alot of late..and the people recognize this..this is a blessing in the physical..but carries the promise of the First and latter rains..a sign to Israel from Him.
Isaiah 30
"He will also send you rain for the seed you saw...a few vs later..
In the day of great slaughter,WHEN THE TOWERS FALL, streams will flow on every high hill and every lofty mountain."
In scripture..the prophetic reality of "Duallity " exists.. something spoken pertaining to that period..may also fullfill again...does this speak of the current rainfall and Sept 11th?
Some things are hard to discern..for me..I just try to stay on track with Israels return to the land..and how nations move toward her and away.

Binyamin Netanyahu has been making the rounds in the U.S. of late...he wrote an OP-ED..mentioning that Israel cannot make peace with Arafat..and should reject a Palistinian state..this is great news..but then..I've heard that Bibi tends to say what he needs to get..and this is a concern..as he may be Israels next Primeminister.

Most interesting. Thanks. It's good to post some of 'our' conversations on the forum for others to read and ponder.

Regarding Bibi, I want him to regain the Prime Ministership. He will keep GWB from going 'wobbly' as Margaret Thatcher aided RWR.

Bibi's motives might be suspect as you stated, but it's imperative for Israel's survival and the war on terrorism (Islam) that Bibi regain his elected position. The sooner, the better!
