Enron's Lay called Greenspan in October

WASHINGTON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Enron Corp.'s (NYSE:ENE - news) Chairman Kenneth Lay telephoned Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan on Oct. 26, a Fed spokesman confirmed on Friday.

The spokesman would not say what was discussed during the conversation but he did say that Greenspan did not follow up the call with any action.

``He did nothing in response to the call. It would have been inappropriate,'' the spokesman said.

The White House has said Lay called U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and Commerce Secretary Don Evans in the autumn. The White House said the two officials opted to do nothing about their calls.

The Justice Department on Wednesday announced it had opened a criminal investigation into the energy trading company, whose December bankruptcy threw thousands out of work, devastated investors and wiped out the pension plans of many employees when its stock price plunged.

Is there anyone that Lay DIDN'T call?

You are right...this is getting very interesting. Bet he called Gray Davis too, trying to get California to pay up on what they owe.

Kenneth Lay...last years salary $141.6 million. Employees left holding the bag for billions. This guy's dirty and he's Bush's chief financial backer. Now you tell me how any clear thinking conservative can blow this off as ONLY a Democratic ploy to drag Bush through the mud.

This IS getting interesting. The presstitutes have sprayed poison gas all over, and now, one by one, the termites undermining this country will be staggering out of the woodwork.

I think President Bush and Veep Cheney are just waiting this out with smiles on their faces as the insects scramble to out themselves before more SHTF.

He is NOT Bush's chief backer. I don't know where you heard that, but it's not true!

Enron according to an AP--Story printed 12/5/01 in our local paper reported :

"California power officials refused last week to help Enron Corp. line up power for their customers, citing credit concerns..."

Seems like Enron contacted power officials in California, too!

Maybe the esteemed Senators should find out who Enron didn't contact instead. Might be less time consuming in managing their boondoggle, er, I mean search.

"This guy's dirty and he's Bush's chief financial backer."

Oh, fer cryin' out loud. A financial backer. Not "chief". Contributions from Enron and its officers constitute less than one-half of one percent of the contributions to Bush's gubernatorial and presidential campaigns.

He's dirty alright. Along with a lot of the executives at Enron and their auditors. But if "Ken Lay had Bush in his pocket", why the hell did the Bush administration ignore his pleas for help and let Enron sink like a stone?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Your language is uncalled for, even with the asterisks.

Lay calling O'Neill is not the same thing as O'Neill calling Lay.

O'Neill could have refused the call, no doubt, but until recently Lay was an important business leader and a respected member of society. Why shouldn't O'Neill take a call from him?
