Ooooh, boy... What does this say to Bush's promise to go after ANY nation that helps the terrorists?!?!
To: Lunatic Fringe
Hmmm ... put them on the list ....
I think Bush is doing his best to line them up for one conflict at a time. Not to say that it will happen this way but from a strategic standpoint it makes more sense not to have to overcommit.
Diplomacy : The art of saying 'nice doggie' while reaching for a really big stick.

I think the Olympic Committee ought to reevaluate giving the games to Bejiing!

: The art of saying 'nice doggie' while reaching for a really big stick. Outside of all out war, which is lunacy IMHO, the only big stick we have is our trade agreements and China's favored status. Bush will need to come down on them hard on these economic issues.
Here we are, dealing with a problem I'll bet Clinton is the cause of. We are going to pay a price for a long time because of him.

"We already know the Taliban and al Qaeda got sizable arms shipments from China, which borders Afghanistan on the north. Opposition forces found huge amounts of Chinese ammunition in the caves of Tora Bora. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld says Chinese have been found fighting among al Qaeda."
Umm..this is a Washington Times article, not Washington Post, btw.
Ok, if anyone ever wanted evidence Bill Gertz was a moron, here it is. HE thinks the only way to get Chinese small arms ammo is if the Chinese government specifically gives it to you? A lot of FReepers are being supported by the PRC, then :-)
Gertz seems to be quoting the nitwits at DEBKA chapter and verse.
And he misleadingly quotes Rumsfeld about Chinese..sure, there were people FROM China with Al Qaeda and the Taliban. There were people FROM the United States, too. So the US was supporting Al Qaeda?
Given this idiocy, it calls into question Bill's supposed "inside tip" that the Chinese sent the Taliban SA-7s (which were apparently never used, btw, if they were sent).

Bush coming down on China. Only after Monica Lewinski becomes a nun.

The US continues to miss completely the warning signals from China. Just like Pearl Harbor and 09/11, we continue to ignore the obvious. Oh I forgot, this isn't the time for recriminations. Excuse me...
To: Lunatic Fringe
Where are all the China sympathizers now? Yoo hoo!
To: John H K
The official said that a week after the terrorist attack, the ruling Taliban and the al Qaeda fighters embedded among them, received a shipment of Chinese-made SA-7 missiles. Assuming this statement is true, the shipment was probably sent before 9-11 unless it was sent via fed ex.

You should quote your source as the Washington Times and not the Washington Post.

This article is a little misleading, just because they found some ammo and a few weapons that were made in China, it does not mean China sold or supplied the weapons and ammo. China sells more small arms than any other nation in the world. From the pictures I have seen of the war in Afghanistan there must be arms from every manufacturer in the world over there. I've seen British, Russian, Chinese and American weapons, ranging from WWII vintage to present day small arms. As far as the ammunition goes, I'm sure most gun owners have some Chinese ammo, Norinco is a big seller here in the States.
Now if we see supply trucks coming from China loaded with supplies and fresh diapers for the heads of the Taliban, it's time to re-thinking the "War Plan", but if not, I dont think there is any need to go "Ballistic" (pardon the pun) over a few small arms and shoulder fired missiles.

Anyone bother to read my article or the post?
It's amazing how people are totally trusting in all unsourced leaks, as long as it's something they want to hear.
And in this case, we've got an unsourced leak combined with clear-cut idiocy by Gertz. But, hey, we all want to believe China is behind all evil in the world.
The one thing about FR is that people need to learn to be suspicious of stuff they WANT to believe, not only stuff they don't want to believe.

Furthermore, the title of the article is "inside the ring", your title is slightly inaccurate when it says "China sent arms to osama after 9-11" The article says, the arms were received within a week after 9-11" It makes no mention of when they were sent.

Yeah, and Japan supplied the Taliban and Al-Qaeda with Toyota trucks.

The United States lets citizens leave the country to do what they wish across the border - the Chinese gov't does not. If there were Chinese people fighting among the Taliban and terrorists in Afghanistan, and Chinese weapons there, too - it was not because they were spoiled smartypants brats from senseless California wealth. There is no comparison.
To: MJY1288
I also suspect SA-7s are avaliable on the world market for purchase from third parties.
And despite what Gertz says, yes, the SA-7 is a shoulder-fired missle like the Stinger, but the SA-7 is to the Stinger what a Yugo is to a Mercedes...both are cars, but they are hardly comparable.

It's possible to get in and out of China's western borders. They can't possibly patrol it all and it certainly doesn't have a wall along its length. It's an enormous country.
And given that about every week hundreds of Chinese immigrants are found dead or alive on some freighter somewhere, people are leaving China all the time without the government specifically sending them away.
And the last thing China wants is Chinese Muslims leaving to train with Al Qaeda to learn terrorism..they already have a terrorism problem.
