Blame Lindh's permissive parents
Boston Globe Online ^ | December 13, 2001 | Jeff Jacoby

IT ISN'T THE CASE that the parents of John Walker Lindh - the Marin County child of privilege turned Taliban terrorist - never drew the line with their son.

True, they didn't do so when he was 14 and his consuming passion was collecting hip-hop CDs with especially nasty lyrics.

Newsweek calls it ''truly perplexing'' that John Lindh, who ''grew up in possibly the most liberal, tolerant place in America ... was drawn to the most illiberal, intolerant sect in Islam.'' There is nothing perplexing about it. He craved standards and discipline. Mom and Dad didn't offer any. The Taliban did.

It doesn't matter in the end. There comes a time of accountability where you have to be responsible for your own actions, and not blame others (including parents). Many people turn out just fine despite how they were or weren't raised.

By the time a kid is 16 a parent has either done their job or has not. After that they make sure that the kid makes it to 18 and hope that they didn't make too many mistakes because it's in the 18 year old's hands after that. These parents clearly didn't do their job.

Bingo!! How right you are. He wanted his parents to tell him NO! when he decided to pretend to be a black gangster. Then, when they "supported" him, he thought, "surely they'll stop me" when he decided to become a Muslim. No, they even gave him money and let him quit high school.

I think if they had kicked his butt when he was 12, he'd be a normal kid in northern California--a little whacky, perhaps, but not a Talibunny. Too bad.

After all, he had been named for one of the giants of our time: John Lennon.

A devastating line, that.

"Devout practitioners of the self-obsessed nonjudgmentalism for which the Bay Area is renowned, Lindh and Walker appear never to have rebuked their son or criticized his choices. In their world, there were no absolutes, no fixed truths, no mandatory behavior, no thou-shalt-nots. If they had one conviction, it was that all convictions are worthy - that nothing is intolerable except intolerance."

John Lindh deserved ''a little kick in the butt'' for keeping them in the dark about his plans, his father said, but otherwise they just wanted to ''give him a big hug.''

These so-called parents ought to be pistol-whipped repeatedly for being such sh*t-for-brains-like-wow-don't-judge-me-man @SSES.

There's no surprise here why their son turned out the way he did. None whatsoever.

The hip-hop phase was mentioned in a remarkable Dec. 11, 2001 New York Times article.

Check out what Andrew Sullivan said about the article:

"BLUE AND RED AGAIN: You may well have read the astonishing piece in the New York Times today about the divergent paths of John Walker and John Spann. The thing that stood out most starkly is the blue-red split. In fact, both are almost absurd stereotypes of each part of America. Here’s Spann’s background: “Mr. Spann grew up foursquare in a four-stoplight Alabama town. Life in Winfield revolved around family, church, duty and high school football, and Mike Spann embraced them all. He took apples to his teacher, played soldier at recess and prayed on Sunday with his family at the Church of Christ.” You couldn’t make that up. Then here’s Walker: “Encouraged by his divorcing parents to seek his own spiritual path, he found himself by rejecting teenage culture in the name of Islam. He sold off his hip- hop records, immersed himself in the Koran and started wearing a long white robe.” One is from Alabama; the other is from Marin County, California. One is a national hero, the first American casualty at the hands of the enemy. The other is the enemy. Does it get any starker than that?"

Libertarians have loathed the Taliban long, long before it became fashionable. They're the perfect example of what we dislike. And in case you've been living under a rock for years, you'll know that the Taliban have no qualms initiating force.

All this time here, and you still haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about. At least your English is getting a little better.

The mother-father of all liberals-libertines!!

Four, too many people in the last 35 years have devised a delusional system whereby they look upon reality and pleas to take basic responsibility as an oppressive right-wing conspiracy. They have been supported in this belief by the media instead of having it challenged.

The Clintons have surfed this psychotic cultural and generational wave into the White House.

The attempt has been made to understand Bill and Hillary Clinton, particularly Bill, in terms of classical neurosis from abusive childhoods. But much of what is seen in the Clinton generation has made that model obsolete, although many from that generation, including psychiatrists and psychologists, desperately hold on to it to relieve themselves of any personal responsibility.

The truth is, Bill and Hillary Clinton have not suffered a bit of inconvenience for nearly 40 years¾including, for Bill, the inconvenience of military service. By his freshman year in high school Bill found he could manipulate people with showy glibness and deception, and nobody would call him on it. A good memory for acting lines would carry him through easy courses in the most prestigious schools in the country without effort or necessity to learn seriously. From there, he went almost immediately to being the boy governor of a state, and on to the presidency. It was all done with a little empty talk on a level that could be found on any high school debate team.

Hillary has led a similar life of ease and is now being pushed to take a senate seat and run for the presidency in 2004 on a platform of angrily confronting a vast right-wing conspiracy¾ which essentially consists of making accusatory and sarcastic remarks at you and me through a TV screen to the delight of angry women, spoiled angry leftists, and angry minorities. It isn't a bad life for an untalented spoiled brat who, without the world of TV and alienated politics, would be lucky to hold a job as a waitress in a truck stop.

The problem with the both Clintons is that they were long ago licensed to think and act at primitive, immature, and irrational levels of functioning. Much of this was a self-conferred licensing by a generation which has continued, and which has been the root of most of the political, economic, and social problems in this country.
