Attack on Iraq 'Off the Table,' Officials Furious at Defense Dept.
Source Close to Dr. Paul Wolfowitz-Deputy Secretary of Defense ^ | December 5, 2001 | Freeper Trixie's co-workers

An impeccable, hall of fame Washington Insider close to the State Department has said that they are furious that an attack on Iraq was 'put off the table.'

The source said that there was not enough unimpeachable evidence to make the war stick with the coalition and that the next target may be Indonesia.

Wolfowitz walked out of the decision meeting absolutely furious, which is interesting becuase it is usually the State Department who have been the 'doves' on this issue recently, but in the last few weeks Colin Powell has drastically changed his position to go after Iraq policy wise in the meetings.

I would still push for the nuke inspections and then test the waters to see if Saddam will comply and then go to the international bodies to see if there is the go-ahead.(if they are worried about the allies)

Why would the state department get pissed at this? They are Saddam's #1 protector. I think you mean the Defense Department was pissed that this option was off the table.

I guess it will soon be 'put up or shut up' time for the UN. It was the group which required the inspections. I would LOVE for Dubya to push them on this, but it sounds like he wants to get things settled somewhat in Afghanistan before he takes a grab of the tail of the Iraqi tiger!

Your post seems to imply that Wolfowitz is with the State Deparment, when he's actually Deputy Secretary of Defense.

It is now unfolding that coalition partners are warming to the idea of going after Saddam: Turkey, like most of Hussein's neighbors, is very willing to topple Saddam and Britain has said they will not rule out attacks on Saddam. In my opinion, the debate between the DoD and the State Department was not whether to go after Iraq, but when.

...the next target may be Indonesia.

How...surreal. Aside from being home to the largest Muslim population in the world, I haven't heard them mentioned much since 9/11.

Wolfowitz is the Deputy Secretary of Defense, not State. I think you are confused.

Powell changed his thinking on Iraq a couple of weeks ago according to Bill Gertz at the Washington Times.

Dont know if the policy switch applies to the deputies.

I am just telling you word for word what is going around town.
