The Bush administration is asking Congress for a second major expansion of federal surveillance powers that legal experts say would radically change laws that have long protected the rights of Americans.

A Justice Department proposal would eliminate the chief legal safeguard in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). A CIA proposal seeks legal authority to gather telephone and Internet records from domestic communication companies.

WE need to invite some input on this next "baby-step" from the usual suspects. It's humorous to see the thin smoke they think they're hiding behind.

This is all consistent with smaller government and states rights... This is actually good news. I feel safer knowing President Bush is our supreme leader and his secret police is watching you.
For too long Americans have had the notion of living secure in their homes and property. The radical ideal that people can assemble in person or electronically without government intrusion is a thing of the past. These are new times and call for new measures to keep our global enterprises running.

Thanks for the heads up! I am in strongly in favor of increased surveillance authority. I believe it is necessary to thwart terrorist attacks before they happen.

I agree with you. In fact I agree with military tribunals against non- citizen terrroist aliens.

However, the Congress and DOJ and Bush administration must also be careful to put the proper safeguards and oversights in the laws for these newly proposed broader surveillance powers (they have not done this yet properly IMHO) or else there will be abuse and over reaching against innocent US citizens by politicians and the FBI and CIA and BATF and DOJ and FISA and .....

Illegal terrorist aliens do not have COnstitutional right as do US citizens. But there still has to be privacy protections for legitimate, private US citizens. Currently, during the need for the rush to go after these alien terrorists, the rights of US citizens are being eroded and not being protected adequately.

On one hand you have the responsibility to protect America from foreign enemies.

On the other hand, you have the responsibility to protect America from domestic enemies.

On one hand, we must watch out for Al Queda and on the other hand we must watch out for another clinton-type of president.

Now those are some difficult choices!
