2 S.F. AIDS activists arrested for threatening, stalking

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Police arrested two AIDS activists Wednesday for allegedly stalking and threatening newspaper reporters and Public Health Department workers.

David Pasquarelli, 34, and Michael Petrelis, 42, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, stalking, terrorist threats and annoying electronic communications, according to San Francisco police.

Newspaper employees said the men made dozens of obscene and threatening phone calls earlier this month to their homes and at work. A bomb threat also was made to the San Francisco Chronicle's offices.

Judge James Robertson II issued a temporary restraining order against Pasquarelli and Petrelis two weeks ago after they allegedly made threatening telephone calls to editors and reporters at the Chronicle.

The two were taken into custody Wednesday after appearing in court to respond to that temporary restraining order.

In addition to the other charges, police Lt. Henry Hunter said Pasquarelli was charged with violating the restraining order.

Lawyers for the Chronicle said the activists apparently were angry about two stories published last month in the newspaper.

One was based on a study by the University of California at San Francisco documenting the increase in unsafe sex practices among gay men in San Francisco. The other focused on statistics from the city's Department of Public Health showing increases in the rates of syphilis among the city's gay and bisexual men.

Police say the men also threatened reporters at the Bay Area Reporter and workers at the health department.

Pasquarelli is a member of the AIDS dissident group ACT UP-San Francisco, which repeatedly has clashed with mainstream AIDS organizations over its belief that HIV does not cause AIDS.

I'm amazed this got reported at all. Usually the media is on the side of the homosexuals...until they start getting threatened by them.

What, exactly, do you mean by "do something about the homosexuals"?

"What, exactly, do you mean by 'do something about the homosexuals'?"

I know your question was addressed to another; however, I also believe, "something(s) should be done."

My recommendations include the following two:

1. Treat AIDS as the public health crisis it is, and quarantine the diseased just as we did/should with other hghly communicable diseases such as leperosy, small-pox, TB, etc.

2. Until such a time as homosexuality is definatively shown to be a genetic trait, do not attribute to it, legal minority status.

Not that I particularly care for laws passed strictly in the interest of minorites (equal protection, and all); however, I would much rather see legal action taken against someone who discriminated against someone who was black, hispanic, American Indian, etc., obvious genetic traits, than against someone who practices a particular behavior, which may or may not be a genetic trait or predisposition.

According to the media, all terrorists are right-wing Republican religious zealots.

Let's all move along now...nothing to see here.

It's really time to do something about the homosexuals.

This statement troubles me a bit--especially in light of your claim to have turned your life over to Jesus Christ. I'm as vigorous opponent of the gay-rights aganda as can be found, and I loathe the gay lifestyle (just as I loathe adultery). But my Christian faith teaches me not to inflict harm or injury on an person or to countenance such acts for these things in the name of Christ.

Maybe I misunderstood the thrust of your statement.

Still, these men should be dealt with strictly for their stalking behavior and acts of intimidation.

"They may be annoying, but they are not terrorists," he said. "These are protesters ... there is a clear distinction. This is heavy handedness by the system to get back at them for being annoying."

Death threats sound a lot like terrorism to me. They deserve to be in jail.
