"That's a runway that's prone to having birds loafing on it," aviation consultant Jim McKenna said. "The Port Authority's always running trucks down the runway. They have fireworks cannons mounted along the length of the runway to scare the birds."

Leave it to government to locate an airport runway so that it passes over a wildlife refuge. Here is a THREAD with pictures of the scene, and discussing the wisdom of this juxtaposition.

The left engine that apparently failed in Monday's crash had been overhauled recently, while the right engine was due for an overhaul soon.

A spokesman said yesterday that the left engine had about 600 hours on it since overhaul, the right engine about 9,000 hours since overhaul, with 10,000 hours being the usual overhaul limit.

It's my feeling that investigators should be looking very hard at the records of the overhaul of the left engine, I think that is where the truth lies.

Seems to me that almost all reports ignore one crucial fact: The Vertical Stabilizer (tail fin) came off BEFORE the engines. It looks to have suffered almost no damage. It landed in Jamaica Bay whereas the engines landed along with the fuselage in the Rockaways.

Whatever caused this crash it almost certainly was NOT the engines. The wing maybe, or some explosion or some type of non-explosive sabotage (there was an A inspection the previous evening and also a tire was changed - mechanical technicians were on and around and working on this vehicle).

I'm planning on flying during the Thanksgiving holidays - I would much prefer to think there are terrorists at work than that our most prestigious airliners can't keep there planes from falling apart on takeoff.

Truth is, either scenario will increase fears of flying. So much for the "economy" or "public confidence" being a motive for an alleged big government cover-up.
