Stanly to close offices for Confederate Memorial Day

ALBEMARLE, N.C. (AP) -- Stanly County commissioners, who had earlier voted against a joint holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert E. Lee, have voted to close county offices on Confederate Memorial Day.

Last month, the commissioners voted to recognize May 10 as Confederate Memorial Day, but not close the county offices. But at the urging of Sons of Confederate Veterans members, commissioner Gerald Efird suggested making it a full holiday, said commissioner Michael Coble.

The measure passed 3-2 Thursday night.

"I'm not happy with it," said Coble, who voted against the measure. "We were already recognizing Confederate Memorial Day and I thought that was the end of it."

The commissioners voted in July to close county offices on Martin Luther King Day and honor Confederate general Robert E. Lee on the same day.

After protests from the local chapter of the NAACP and community leaders, the commissioners voted in August to follow the state holiday schedule. The state gives its employees the King holiday and recognizes Confederate Memorial Day on May 10, but does not close its offices.

What does the NAACP have against Confederate soldiers? There were quite a few high-ranked men who wore the gray whose views on slavery and race were more admirable than those of most Northerners (and in all probability, more sincere). After all, Yankees that were anti-slavery faced little direct opposition (most Northerners already had a dislike of the South), but for a resident of the South to speak against slavery demanded courage against the powerful (though small and in the minority) planters and hot-head seccesionists. Ah, but what does the NAACP care of knowing the truth.

Maybe the King holiday should be changed to May 1, the international communist observance in that the Reverend King was found to have worked with two communists in his civil rights crusades. These communists were named O'Dell and Levison. It's in the FBI reports, as I understand.

I grew up in a state that celebrates Casmir Pulaski day. Nothing surprises me anymore.

What is that supposed to mean? You don't think they should celebrate the confederacy with a day off? Or are you angry with me over the top hat comment? :)

It's not my place to tell them what to celebrate and what not. I mean, Massachussetts has it's Patriots Day holiday, why shouldn't...whatever state this is celebrate confederate memorial day? Hallmark should launch a new line of cards.
