This "deal" is worse than reported in the US media. The Chinese version of the story makes it quite clear- not only are AOL Time Warner and Newscorp getting a small market near Hong Kong (which already has more liberal broadcasts) in exchange for the FULL US market as reported in the US media, but this "deal" is giving US "entertainment" programs in exchange for CCTV "news" (PRC propoganda).
The China Daily version of this great "deal":
Big Brother PRC, coming soon to a channel near you!

So a small part of a small province near Hong Kong gets "Friends" reruns and the USA gets news and enlightening cultural information.
Way back when Clinton was president, he said opening trade with China will make them more like us, but looking at Chinese history, they have mostly assimilated every invader. I thought it much more likely that we would become more Chinese.
Now they can broadcast their culture to us, and it probably will be packaged and produced by American producers and won't even look Chinese after the first year or two. Think they will teach us about forced pregnancy tests and abortions?
Just as an aside, in Earth in the Balance Algor said he wanted to reduce the world population and control who breeds, how Chinese of him!
If you've never seen the N. Korean News website where some nice Japanese folks translate the ONLY news disseminated in North Korea, it's frightening. This garbage could wake up even the most mind-numbed sheeple.

lol, yep DBrow. They get friends, we get a Peoples Republic of China state run broadcast from CCTV. Hey, we can even get a preview of this hard hitting propoganda machine:
OTOH, piping "Friends" into China could completely destroy their culture, just like network TV has done here in America! LOL
While I agree with you that to see CCTV communist propagandists in action would be eye opening (and likely amusing), I am quite sure this is a bad thing as far as the fairness of the "deal" goes.
As DBrow says, we give China "Friends" - entertainment, and only in a very minor market. China on the otherhand gets to broadcast its propoganda to the entire US market under the guise of "news" and "culture."
JMO: I think it would do a great deal to frighten people, as they should be duly frightened, when they see what communist propaganda is. It'll scare the socks off of some people here. I think that's a VERY good thing.

China Opposed to U.S. Sales of ¡°Maverick ¡± Missiles to Taiwan: Spokesman
China is firmly opposed to the United States' plan of selling Maverick missiles to Taiwan, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said at a press conference Thursday.
Spokesman Zhu Bangzao made the remark when asked to comment on the statement by the U.S. Department of Defense on September 5 that the United States may sell 40 Maverick missiles to Taiwan to arm its F-16 fighter jets.
Zhu said that China is seriously concerned about this. Such an act by the United States would send a wrong signal to the Taiwan authorities and constitute a gross interference in China's internal affairs. China is firmly opposed to this, he said.
Zhu said that the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques are the basis for Sino-U.S. relations, and U.S. arms sales to Taiwan will once again violate the three joint communiques, especially the one issued on August 17, 1982, and the relevant commitments the U.S. side has made.
China demands the United States realize the harm of arms sales to Taiwan, adhere to the "one China" policy, the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques and relevant commitments, stop arms sales to Taiwan so as to avoid harming the cross-straits relations and Sino- U.S. relations, Zhu said.
Zhu said that U.S. arms sales to Taiwan would be an encouragement to the island's forces for "independence," will certainly have a negative impact on the stability of the Taiwan Straits. It is not in the interests of the development of the cross-straits situation, the Sino-U.S. relations and not in the interests of the United States, the spokesman said.

lol, great stuff, eh? It will get old rather quickly,Taiwan bashing, Japanese bashing, Falungong bashing, etc.
Precisely. They can't help themselves. LOL
You are kidding, right ;) Of course its not AOL/Time Warner and News Corp I am concerned about as far as "fairness" goes - its the people that have their choices of channels limited by a lousy deal. Thre are a limited number of cable channels (even with digital, though much expanded) - now it looks like we can be sure one of them will be state run Chinese Television (CCTV) propaganda, instead of a channel that might carry much more worthy and fair news. The same problems of fairness apply to the Chinese people - if a fair deal had been struck, they might have been able to see news presented more accurately without the bias, exagerations, and often outright lies, of state run Chinese television.
The folks in charge of CCTV (the Chinese government) have NO idea how to sell their BS to America -- and, as I said, IMHO, they'll blow it. And I'd sure welcome that!
They are probably paying a billion and a half a year to get to broadcast to us. They will spend another 400 million to hire the best and brightest admen and marketers and propagandists. In a year or two the channel will not look Chinese, will not sound Chinese, will be as slick and polished as any of our nets.
There will be enough Chinese on screen and enough features of China, for sure, but the guys directing the overall nonpolitical content will be Americans.
When Nikon, Toyota, Hundai, Mitsubishi and Nippon want to sell goods here, they hire American marketing and advertising firms who really do understand us, who conduct focus groups and surveys, who know how to sell to us. They do not show Japanese actors showing off their Sentras and Kubota tractors, and I expect the Chinese to do the same with the flow of data to us.
The CCTV article was hilarious, wasn't it! After reading it, I think I finally understand your point (and your humor) regarding how silly the PRC propoganda looks to us. But its still a lousy deal for American and Chinese viewers...;)
"Statement of spokesman for DPRK Foreign Ministry"
"Pyongyang, September 6 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the DPRK Foreign Ministry today issued a statement to the press 56 years after the U.S. troops occupied South Korea. The statement said:
On September 8,56 years ago, the U.S. troops occupied South Korea.
The United States, who had watched for a chance to invade Korea from over a hundred years ago, occupied South Korea by force of arms allegedly under the pretext of "disarming" the defeated Japanese army after the end of the second world war.
If the U.S. troops had not been stationed in South Korea, the Korean nation would not have sustained the tragedy of territorial and national division under the constant threat of war for more than half a century. (*Uh huh- the north would have rolled over the south, subjugated it and both sides would be eating tree bark, today while the North's glorious leader ruled all between bites of pizza from his foreign pizza chefs*)
All the patriotic efforts of the peace-loving DPRK government and people to put an end to national division and achieve independent and peaceful reunification of the country have not borne proper fruition due to the obstructive moves of the U.S. troops since their military occupation of South Korea. (*How dare we stand in the way of the North's raping and pillaging of the south?*)
The tough and hostile policy of the new U.S. administration towards the DPRK is now further increasing the danger of the U.S. troops stationed in South Korea. (*Sounds like a threat against the US to me*)
The Bush administration defined the DPRK as "no. 1 enemy" (*No, that honor goes to China, but your nose to nose, I reckon*) and is unilaterally forcing it to "reduce conventional force" in a bid to disarm and stifle it by force of arms, (*How are we doing this by 'force of arms? We're just sitting in one place waiting for an invasion from the north.*) instead of taking a practical measure to withdraw its aggressor troops from South Korea without delay in conformity with the mounting desire of the Korean nation for reunification and the atmosphere of peace and detente on the Korean peninsula after the announcement of the June 15 joint declaration.
The United States is vociferating in public about "resumption of dialogue" without precondition with the DPRK, while extensively reinforcing its armed forces in and around South Korea, modernizing them with up-to-date equipment and staging war exercises against the DPRK one after another.(*We are? Well good.*)
The arms buildup and war exercises corresponding to the U.S. military presence in South Korea are now increasing arms race and the danger of war in the Korean peninsula and northeast Asia.
This situation clearly proves that the U.S. troops stationed in South Korea are a big obstacle to the improvement of inter-Korean and the DPRK-U.S. relations and the smooth settlement of the issue of peace and reunification on the Korean peninsula. (*Why yes, surrendering to every desire a dictator has does make you an obstacle to his conquest. *)
The present reality clearly shows that the U.S. troops stationed in South Korea are the harasser of peace, the very one who keeps the nation divided and the root cause of all misfortune and sufferings of the Korean people. (*? Blame your own asinine and self-destructive policies on us? *)
The withdrawal of U.S. troops from South Korea is a pressing issue the solution of which brooks no further delay for peace and security in the Korean peninsula and northeast Asia. "(*They've had peace since we pushed your butts back across the line, junior.* )
