May 6 (Bloomberg) -- Boston's Roman Catholic Archdiocese said Paul R. Shanley and Ronald H. Paquin were defrocked as priests by Pope John Paul II following allegations of sexual abuse.
Shanley's dismissal was effective Feb. 19, and Paquin was expelled today. ``They are no longer to be referred to as priest nor to exercise sacramental ministry as they do not have the faculties of the church,'' the archdiocese said in a statement.

(O Promise of God from age to age. O Flower of the Gospel!)
Boston's Roman Catholic Archdiocese said Paul R. Shanley and Ronald H. Paquin were defrocked as priests by Pope John Paul II following allegations of sexual abuse. The term defrocked is a secular term not found in Canon law, the correct term is dismissal.

"Degraded" is the term in Canon Law, which is essentially the same as defrocked.

Too bad it took them so long with Shanley. Even after he wrote some of his most noxious opinions on the subject of man-boy love he was still photographed yucking it up in full clerical garb with Cardinal Law.
Talk about bringing scandal to the Church.
It's time for an overhaul of celibacy rules in the priesthood. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Celibacy for monastic and certain other religious orders only. For the rest, family men. That's what is needed to reduce and hopefully eventually eliminate the highly corrosive influence of the Lavender Mafia on the Roman Catholic Church.
