In 1863 while the CSS Alabama was at Saldanha Bay in what is now South Africa Lt Simeon Cummings, assistant engineer of the Alabama was killed in a hunting accident. His earthly dust remained interred in the Pienaar family graveyard where it lay until 1994. Lt Cummings was the only War Between the States interment in Africa. In May of 1994 the remains were disinterred and moved at considerable expense to be reburied at Elm Springs Farm, Columbia Tennessee, the national headquarters for the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Why after so log a time was this felt necessary. The arrival of the ANC controlled blackamoor regime in South Africa might explain this otherwise curious event.
