Great commercial. Shouldn’t the kid have saluted first?

If he were a Marine, should have covered himself before saluting. Appears he was Army, so he is forgiven, I think.

Marines do not salute uncovered. Swabbies, Doggies, and Zoomies, I dunno.....

Can anyone see their ranks? I thought I saw captain on the Grampa and no stripes on the young guy.

As he was a sgt and the [grand] father an officer, yes.
… but if you want to be technical, the hug was [frowned-upon] public display of affection, too.

The technical proprieties would’ve downgraded honoring a returning hero in this case.

Isn’t there a rule you never salute an officer first? To avoid giving away rank, especially if there could be snipers watching?

The kid did show the first sign of respect by coming to attention at the appearance of the retired soldier. If they were both serving active duty I’d say yes but I think the message was that the retired soldier respects what the current soldier is doing by following in his footsteps. Semantics at play there. Good commercial.
