One thing about the movie. I’ don’t think Little Round Top had trees, back then. I am under the impression that Little Round Top had been logged off, and was bare of cover.

You are correct. Little Round had been partially cleared. Scattered boulders/rocks provided cover for Infantry. Per Thomaslegion.net

One of the things the NPS and historians have been doing recently, is trying to restore the battlefield to its condition during the battle. There has been tree cutting, and replanting of the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield areas.
